Here’s more about Br. Brendan Geary, FMS, PhD, our speaker for the workshop series, “Sexual Dynamics, Safeguarding, and Religious Life” on September 4 & 5 at the Loyola School of Theology in Ateneo de Manila University:
Brother Brendan Geary was born in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1957 and entered the Marist novitiate in Dublin in 1975. He studied English and History at Glasgow University (M.A.) graduating in 1981. He has worked as a teacher and youth worker, formator and psychotherapist. He has worked in the United Kingdom, Cameroon and the United States, and has led workshops in many countries. He studied for a Doctorate in Pastoral Counselling at Loyola College in Maryland (1997 – 2003) where he worked with a range of groups. He specialised in work with s*x offenders and victims of s*xual abuse. He is a Registered Clinical and Counselling Psychologist and Psychotherapist.
He was the Provincial of the Marist Province of West Central Europe from 2010 - 2019. He has co-edited four books, including The Dark Night of the Catholic Church, on the clergy s*xual abuse scandal, and has published articles and book chapters on a range of topics in the areas of psychology and spirituality. He is currently a member of the joint Care and Protection Commission of the International Union of Superiors General and the Union of Superiors General based in Rome, which involves providing training webinars for members of General Councils and people in positions of leadership in religious orders of men and women. He has recently completed a PhD in Practical Theology at Glasgow University, based on research with four Australian Marist brothers and four former brothers who had abused children, to better understand the factors that may have contributed to the abuse of children.
