One of the Philippines’ most successful disaster-risk strategies isn’t a seawall or a satellite. It’s the 𝙥𝙪𝙧𝙤𝙠.
In the Philippines, the purok shows us that 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘪𝘴 𝘣𝘶𝘪𝘭𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩 𝘯𝘦𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘣𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘺 𝘯𝘦𝘵𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘬𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘦. Q***r Filipino life shows us the same thing from another angle—when official systems are incomplete or unsafe, people build chosen families that function as their own survival infrastructure.
If climate resilience depends on relationships, then 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺𝘥𝘢𝘺 𝘸𝘢𝘺𝘴 𝘲𝘶𝘦𝘦𝘳 𝘱𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘯𝘦𝘨𝘰𝘵𝘪𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘣𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘨, 𝘷𝘪𝘴𝘪𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺, 𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘦, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘮𝘶𝘵𝘶𝘢𝘭 𝘴𝘶𝘱𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵 𝘮𝘢𝘺 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘣𝘦 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘱𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘭 𝘵𝘰 𝘤𝘭𝘪𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘢𝘥𝘢𝘱𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯—𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘺 𝘮𝘢𝘺 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘯 𝘣𝘦 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘭 𝘵𝘰 𝘪𝘵 (Austrian Journal of South-East Asian Studies, 2017).
