In light of the recent fraternity-related violence associated with the Alpha Phi Beta Fraternity (APB), UP Babaylan, together with the Sanctuary Project โ UP Diliman, vehemently condemns the Alpha Phi Beta Fraternity and every fraternity that cloaks dehumanization, degradation, and objectification in the guise of brotherhood and tradition.
This violence is not an isolated incident. From the scandal involving Upsilon Sigma Phi, reports of hazing involving Sigma Rho, to persistent and unchecked rumbles, the UP community has repeatedly demanded accountability. Yet, fraternities continue to evade meaningful consequences.
We, therefore, call for an immediate, transparent, and impartial investigation by the University Administration, the College of Law โ Office of the Dean, the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, and the Office of Anti-Sexual Harassment. We also call on the University Student Council under the leadership of ๐จ๐ฆ๐ ๐๐ต๐ฎ๐ถ๐ฟ๐ฝ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐๐ผ๐ป ๐๐บ๐ถ ๐๐น๐ณ๐ผ๐ป๐๐ผ, a member of APB's sister sorority, and Law Student Government to enforce concrete accountability measures, prioritizing the safety and well-being of those harmed over institutional ties. We expect ๐จ๐ฆ๐ ๐๐ต๐ฎ๐ถ๐ฟ๐ฝ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐๐ผ๐ป ๐๐น๐ณ๐ผ๐ป๐๐ผ to be impartial and to not let her organizational tie with APB from holding the fraternity accountable.
We further demand the immediate resignation of all fratmen from their incumbent student council and leadership positions, particularly APB's ๐๐ฎ๐ฝ๐ ๐๐ฟ๐ด๐ฎ๐ป๐ฎ, ๐๐ฆ๐ ๐ฃ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐๐ถ๐ฑ๐ฒ๐ป๐, ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ ๐ฆ๐ฒ๐ถ๐ท๐ถ๐ฟ๐ผ ๐ข๐ด๐ฎ๐๐ฎ, ๐ง๐ต๐ถ๐ฟ๐ฑ ๐ฌ๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ฟ ๐๐ฎ๐๐ฐ๐ต ๐ฅ๐ฒ๐ฝ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐๐ฒ๐ป๐๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐๐ฒ. Those who have participated in or enabled harm cannot claim to represent and protect the student body.
Ultimately, UP Babaylan and the Sanctuary Project โ UP Diliman call for the abolition of fraternities. There is no place in UP for organizations that uphold violence, fear, and exclusion. We stand with survivors, demand accountability, and refuse to accept a culture of impunity.
