"Speak the truth to one another; render in your gates judgments that are true and make for peace." (Zechariah 8:16)
The Conference of Major Superiors in the Philippines β Justice, Peace, and Integrity of Creation Commission (CMSP-JPICC), together with our mission partners, expresses our prayerful solidarity with Rev. Fr. Flaviano Antonio L. Villanueva, SVD, following the allegations publicly raised against him during the recent Senate hearing. For many years, Fr. Flavie has faithfully dedicated his priestly ministry to accompanying the poor, the marginalized, the families of victims of violence, and those seeking healing, justice, and hope. His life and ministry have borne witness to the Gospel's preferential love for those who suffer and whose voices are often unheard. His commitment to human dignity, restorative justice, and compassionate accompaniment has inspired many and has become a sign of hope for those living at the margins of society.
We are likewise deeply troubled by the ongoing crisis that has engulfed the Senate, a crisis that has exposed serious questions regarding leadership, institutional credibility, and fidelity to the truth. What should be a chamber dedicated to sober deliberation, democratic accountability, and public service has increasingly become marked by political confrontation, competing interests, and controversies that have further eroded public confidence. At a time when the nation urgently needs moral leadership and statesmanship, many Filipinos are witnessing a disturbing spectacle that risks reducing democratic institutions to arenas of political maneuvering rather than instruments of justice and the common good. A Senate weakened by political maneuvering, partisan calculations, and the pursuit of political advantage cannot effectively fulfill its constitutional mandate as a guardian of truth, accountability, and democratic governance. The nation deserves institutions that rise above factional interests, resist the temptation of political theater, and place the common good at the center of public service. The credibility of our democratic institutions depends not only on their powers but also on the integrity, impartiality, and moral courage with which those powers are exercised. Recent Senate proceedings have likewise raised profound concerns about the use of legislative inquiries as platforms where allegations may be amplified before they are adequately substantiated. While the Senate possesses an essential constitutional mandate to investigate matters affecting the public interest, this mandate must always be exercised with impartiality, prudence, and respect for due process. The pursuit of truth must never be overshadowed by political calculations, public spectacle, or partisan advantage.
We are alarmed by the growing normalization of unverified accusations, character assassination, and trial by publicity. Such practices weaken democratic institutions, diminish public confidence, and undermine the rule of law. When truth becomes subordinate to political interests, when power is exercised without responsibility, and when public discourse is driven by division rather than discernment, it is always the peopleβespecially the poor and vulnerableβwho suffer the consequences.
As disciples of Christ and advocates of justice, we cannot remain silent in the face of these realities. Silence in moments of moral confusion can become complicity. The Gospel calls us to defend truth against falsehood, conscience against manipulation, and human dignity against every attempt to demean or weaponize it for political ends. We affirm that accountability and due process are not opposing principles but essential partners in the pursuit of justice. Genuine accountability demands credible evidence, rigorous scrutiny, and fidelity to the truth. Equally, justice requires safeguarding every person's dignity and reputation against unfounded accusations and public condemnation without due process.
We therefore stand in solidarity with Fr. Flaviano Antonio L. Villanueva, SVD, and with all Church workers, human rights defenders, peace advocates, and servants of the poor who continue to carry out their mission despite hostility, intimidation, vilification, and attempts to silence their voices. We recognize that those who stand with the vulnerable are often themselves made vulnerable. As the Church throughout the world commemorates the 800th Anniversary of the Easter (Transitus) of St. Francis of Assisi, we are invited to renew our commitment to the Gospel values of truth, justice, reconciliation, and peace. In a time marked by polarization, misinformation, declining public trust in institutions, and deep divisions in public life, the witness of St. Francis reminds us that truth must never be sacrificed for expediency, nor human dignity diminished by prejudice and suspicion. The pursuit of justice must always be accompanied by humility, integrity, and courage. We therefore call upon our political leaders to recover the virtues of statesmanship, integrity, humility, and accountability. Public office is a sacred trust, not a platform for personal ambition or partisan advantage. The Filipino people deserve leaders who seek truth rather than spectacle, service rather than self-interest, and the common good rather than political gain. At this critical moment in our nation's life, we urge all institutions of government to resist the temptations of political expediency and to recommit themselves to justice, transparency, and democratic accountability.
Our people are weary of division and conflict. They long for leadership that inspires hope, restores trust, strengthens institutions, and places the welfare of the nation above all vested interests. We assure Fr. Flaviano Antonio L. Villanueva, SVD, the Society of the Divine Word, and all those committed to the defense of human dignity, human rights, peace building, and the service of the poor of our prayers, solidarity, and support.
We implore our leaders in government to set an example of humility and service for the common good. St. Francis reminds us that humble service to God and His people is the way of peace and justice.
We ask all people of goodwill to act justly, love mercy and to walk humbly with our God and people.
May the God of truth and justice guide our nation toward conversion, healing, accountability, and lasting peace.
