Motorcycle/Small Engine Servicing NC II
Piston and Piston Ring Assembly and Installation
What is a Piston?
The piston is a cylindrical engine component that moves up and down inside the cylinder. It receives the force generated by combustion and transfers it to the connecting rod and crankshaft, producing engine power.
What are Piston Rings?
Piston rings are installed in the grooves of the piston and have the following functions:
Seal the combustion chamber to maintain compression.
Control engine oil on the cylinder wall.
Transfer heat from the piston to the cylinder wall.
Prevent blow-by gases from escaping into the crankcase.
Identifying the Intake Side and Exhaust Side of the Piston
Most pistons have an arrow mark on the piston crown. The arrow usually points toward the exhaust side of the engine.
Some pistons are marked with "IN" (Intake) and "EX" (Exhaust) for proper orientation.
Always refer to the service manual for the correct installation direction.
Proper Installation of Piston Rings
Ring Positioning
Install the piston rings in their correct grooves:
Top Compression Ring
Second Compression Ring
Oil Ring Assembly
Ring Gap Arrangement
Position the ring end gaps approximately 120 degrees apart from each other.
Do not align the ring gaps in a straight line, as this can cause compression leakage and increased oil consumption.
Installation Tips
Clean the piston ring grooves before installation.
Check the piston ring end gap clearance according to the manufacturer's specifications.
Lubricate the piston, rings, and cylinder wall with clean engine oil before assembly.
Use a piston ring expander tool whenever possible to avoid damaging the rings.
Ensure that markings such as "TOP" on the rings face upward toward the piston crown.
Importance of Proper Assembly
Proper piston and piston ring installation helps:
Maintain good engine compression.
Improve engine performance.
Reduce oil consumption.
Extend engine life.
Prevent premature engine failure.
