📚 🏀🌱 Children belong in classrooms, playgrounds, and safe communities, not in workplaces.

Yet around the world, millions of children 👧🏻 🧒🏻 remain trapped in child labour, doing work that can be dangerous to their health and well-being. In the Philippines, an estimated 509,000 children are involved in child labour, many of them are working in agriculture.

While progress has been made, it is not happening fast enough.

On this World Day Against Child Labour, Terre des Hommes Netherlands joins the global call 📣 for “Fair Play for Children, Decent Work for Adults.”

Ending child labour requires addressing its root causes. By investing in quality education, strengthening child protection systems, supporting families, and ensuring decent work opportunities for adults, we can help prevent child labour and protect children from exploitation. 🛡

Together, we can turn commitments into action and build a future where every child is free to learn, grow, and flourish. 🧡

Strong partnerships create lasting impact 🤝🏻

In his recent article marking the International Day Against Child Labour, Ambassador of the European Union to the Philippines Massimo Santoro highlighted the collective efforts of the European Union, the Philippine government, and civil society organisations to protect children and eliminate child labour.

The article also features the European Union's partnership with Terre des Hommes Netherlands through the “Strengthening the Community-Based Protection Systems to eliminate Worst Forms of Child Labour (WFCL) in Visayas Region” Project, implemented in collaboration with Bidlisiw Foundation Inc. - Philippines and Children's Legal Bureau, Inc. Through this initiative, local government agencies, service providers and other relevant stakeholders were supported in developing and implementing child-centred 👩🏻🧒🏻 plans and programmes to address WFCL, including the sexual exploitation of children.

The project also strengthened the capacity of children, young people, and communities to champion children's rights and actively monitor and report cases of child labour, contributing to safer and more protective environments for children.

We extend our sincere appreciation to Ambassador Massimo Santoro and the European Union in the Philippines for recognising our work, and emphasizing the vital role of civil society and community-led actions in advancing children's rights and protection. ♥️

The fight against child labour continues, and we remain steadfast in supporting children and communities as they drive change and build a future free from exploitation.

Our thoughts are with the families, children, young people, and communities affected by the magnitude 7.8 earthquake in Mindanao. 🙏🏻

In the hours and days following the earthquake, communities have mobilized with remarkable care, solidarity, and leadership. Volunteers, responders, local authorities, faith leaders, and community groups are working together to navigate uncertainty and begin the process of recovery.

As these efforts continue, it is important to recognize that children and young people are not separate from recovery efforts. They are part of them.

Children and young people are experiencing this earthquake alongside their families and communities. They are making sense of disrupted routines, damaged schools, displacement, and ongoing aftershocks. They are also caring for younger siblings, supporting one another, sharing information, helping their families adapt, and imagining what recovery can look like.

Recovery is not only about rebuilding homes, roads, schools, and services. It is also about restoring the relationships, spaces, and opportunities that allow children and young people to feel safe, stay connected, continue learning, participate in community life, and shape the future of their communities.

With millions of learners affected and thousands of schools temporarily closed, ensuring that children and young people remain connected to family, community, learning, and support networks must not be an afterthought but part of recovery plans from the beginning.

The following reminders highlight ways families, communities, volunteers, and responders can work together to uphold the rights, dignity, well-being, and participation of children and young people in the days ahead. ❤️‍🩹
