DID YOU KNOW?
Did you know that a Carmelite priest who suffered from poor health for much of his life eventually gave his life for the faith during the French Revolution? Blessed Jacques Retouret, (O.Carm.), was born on September 15, 1746, in Limoges, France, into a prosperous merchant family. A serious and gifted young man with a great love for books, he entered the Carmelite house in his hometown at just 15 years old.
After his ordination, Jacques became known for his learning, holiness, and gift for preaching. Large crowds gathered to hear him proclaim the Gospel. However, despite his remarkable gifts, he was often unable to fulfill his many preaching engagements because of the persistent poor health that afflicted him throughout his life.
When the French Revolution brought persecution upon the Church, Jacques remained faithful to the Church and to the Pope. He refused to swear allegiance to the revolutionary government's Civil Constitution of the Clergy, which sought to place the Church under state control. Because of his refusal, he was arrested and condemned to deportation together with many other priests and religious.
Jacques was taken to Rochefort and imprisoned aboard a prison ship while awaiting deportation. The conditions were horrific. The prisoners suffered from hunger, thirst, overcrowding, poor sanitation, disease, and extreme heat and cold. A British naval blockade prevented the ships from leaving, turning them into floating prisons. Despite his frail health and the terrible conditions, Jacques remained faithful to his vocation and to Christ.
Blessed Jacques Retouret died on August 26, 1794, at Madame Island near Rochefort, France, at the age of 48. Fellow prisoners testified to his holiness and perseverance. On October 1, 1995, Pope John Paul II beatified Jacques Retouret together with 63 other priests and religious who died as martyrs during the persecution of the French Revolution.
Blessed Jacques Retouret reminds us that holiness is not measured by the absence of suffering, but by faithfulness in the midst of it. His life is a powerful witness that weakness, illness, persecution, and hardship cannot prevent us from remaining faithful to God. As we remember him on his feast day, may his courage and perseverance inspire us to remain steadfast in faith and faithful to Christ and His Church.
Blessed Jacques Retouret, pray for us!
