IN MEMORIAM
Atty. Ibarra “B**g” A. Malonzo
The National Federation of Labor (NFL) mourns the passing of Atty. Ibarra “B**g” A. Malonzo - unionist, development worker, and steadfast servant of the Filipino working class.
From the shop floors and plantations to the halls of negotiation and institution-building, Atty. B**g lived a life anchored in one unwavering commitment: the dignity of labor. In 1987, he rose to become National President of the NFL, embodying a generation of leaders who believed that unions must not only fight for rights, but also help build the material foundations of workers’ lives.
His leadership helped pioneer a vision that went beyond traditional trade unionism. Under his guidance, plantation unions were transformed into agrarian reform-based cooperatives - an audacious shift that linked workers’ struggles with land, livelihood, and long-term economic empowerment. For Atty. B**g, collective bargaining was never the endpoint; it was only one front in a broader struggle for social justice.
This same vision carried into his work in Mindanao, where he became a central figure in the growth of the Kasanyangan Center for Community Development and Microfinance Foundation, Inc. (KCCDMFI). As President and CEO, and later as Chairman Emeritus, he helped steer the institution through some of its most difficult years - amid conflict, economic instability, and organizational crisis. When others would have retreated, Atty. B**g stepped forward. When communities were displaced and livelihoods shattered, he insisted on rebuilding not only systems, but hope. He believed deeply that the poor are not passive beneficiaries, but active agents of their own development.
Yet, beyond his titles and achievements, those who worked with him remember something more enduring: his quiet determination, his sharp strategic mind, and his ability to bridge the worlds of labor and development, advocacy and institution-building, struggle and reconstruction. He carried the lessons of organizing into every space he entered, and he never lost sight of the people at the center of the work.
Atty. B**g’s life reminds us that the labor movement must constantly evolve, without ever surrendering its core principles. He showed that it is possible to fight and to build, to resist and to create.
Today, NFL honors not only a former National President, but a comrade whose legacy continues in every worker organized, every cooperative formed, and every community that refuses to be left behind.
We extend our deepest condolences to his family, colleagues, and all those whose lives he touched.
His struggle is now our charge.
Mabuhay ang manggagawang Pilipino!
Ipagpapatuloy ang laban ni B**g Malonzo!
