For this edition of TIESPHI’s Ecotourism Around the World, we travel to a country bridging Europe and Asia and discover what its destinations can teach us about meaningful and responsible tourism.

Imagine watching the sun rise over a landscape of extraordinary rock formations, valleys, cave dwellings, and centuries-old settlements while hot-air balloons drift across the sky.
Welcome to Cappadocia.
At its heart is Göreme National Park and the Rock Sites of Cappadocia, recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site for its remarkable combination of natural formations and cultural heritage.
Its famous “fairy chimneys” were sculpted by natural forces over time, while generations of people carved homes, churches, monasteries, and underground spaces into the surrounding rock.
Cappadocia reminds us that sometimes nature and human history become inseparable—and protecting one means protecting the other.

✈️ HOW TO GET THERE FROM THE PHILIPPINES
Filipino travelers can use Istanbul as the primary international gateway to Türkiye, with nonstop flights available from Manila.
From Istanbul, domestic flights and ground transportation connect travelers to Cappadocia and many other destinations throughout the country.
🇵🇭 Filipino passport holders should always verify current Turkish visa and entry requirements through official government channels before making travel arrangements.
🌱 THE ECOTOURISM LESSON
Türkiye gives us an important reminder:
A destination is not simply a place to photograph. It is a place to understand, respect, and help preserve.
Cappadocia’s landscape, Pamukkale’s natural formations, Ephesus’ archaeological heritage, and Türkiye’s many communities show us that tourism has a responsibility beyond bringing visitors.
It must also help protect the environment, heritage, culture, and people that give a destination its identity.
And this brings the lesson home to the Philippines. 🇵🇭
As we develop our own islands, mountains, heritage towns, indigenous communities, protected landscapes, and emerging destinations, perhaps we should ask:
How can we welcome more travelers without losing what made our destinations worth visiting in the first place?
Because successful tourism should not only increase arrivals.
It should leave destinations—and the communities who call them home—better for tomorrow. 🌱
