Happy 40th Anniversary of EDSA!

To our APNIEVE educators: Today reminds us that the "Power of the People" is rooted in the values you teach every day. While 1986 was a historic moment, your work in Learning to Live Together is the ongoing movement.

𝓞𝓷 𝓽𝓱𝓲𝓼 𝓭𝓪𝔂 𝟒𝟎 𝔂𝓮𝓪𝓻𝓼 𝓪𝓰𝓸, 𝓽𝓱𝓮 𝓹𝓸𝔀𝓮𝓻 𝓸𝓯 𝓽𝓱𝓮 𝓹𝓮𝓸𝓹𝓵𝓮 𝓫𝓻𝓸𝓾𝓰𝓱𝓽 𝓬𝓱𝓪𝓷𝓰𝓮 𝓹𝓮𝓪𝓬𝓮𝓯𝓾𝓵𝓵𝔂.

The morning of 25 February found Manila preparing for two inaugurations. The people flocked to Club Filipino in San Juan to witness the start of a new era. All across the metro and in cities and towns across the country, from Baguio to Davao, the people joined in the last wave of People Power.

As the day went on, more and more of the military broke away to side with the people. Triumphal crowds gathered around Nagtahan and Mendiola, cutting up the barbed wire that once separated them to bring home as souvenirs. The people could feel that the a new page had turned in the story of our people; and that they were the driving force for that change. Whatever lay ahead in the future, they would be the ones who would write it. The whole world now knew that in the Philippines, Power was in the hands of the People.

"Bayan Ko" was a popular nationalistic song from the early 20th century. It signified one's longing for the country to be free from oppression and subjugation. As a symbol of our struggle for freedom, the song had become an unofficial 2nd national anthem and remains a staple for celebrations and protests. During the EDSA People Power Revolution, the song was often heard to rally the people during moments of intense pressure or crisis, with Radio Veritas intermittently playing it as part of their broadcast.

Today, APNIEVE Philippines proudly joins the global community in observing the International Day for Education, marked annually on 24 January to celebrate the power of education as a force for peace, development, and dignity for all.

This year’s official theme, Power of Youth in Co-Creating Education, reminds us that young people are not just learners, but essential partners in shaping education systems that are inclusive, relevant, and future-ready. Young voices must be heard, valued, and empowered in policy-making, program design, and community action so that education truly reflects their needs and aspirations. ([UNESCO][1])

At APNIEVE Philippines, we believe that education is a fundamental human right and a springboard for opportunity and transformation. By uplifting youth leadership and supporting meaningful participation, we help ensure that education fosters resilience, critical thinking, equity, and social justice for every learner.
