𝗔𝗞𝗕𝗔𝗬𝗔𝗡 𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗗𝗘𝗠𝗡𝗦 𝗗𝗘𝗔𝗧𝗛 𝗧𝗛𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗧𝗦 𝗔𝗚𝗔𝗜𝗡𝗦𝗧 𝗦𝗘𝗡𝗔𝗧𝗢𝗥 𝗥𝗜𝗦𝗔 𝗛𝗢𝗡𝗧𝗜𝗩𝗘𝗥𝗢𝗦

Akbayan Party strongly condemns the death threats directed at Senator Risa Hontiveros, our highest-elected party leader in government. We call on the authorities to act immediately to identify, investigate, and prosecute those responsible. Death threats and intimidation have no place in a democratic society. Democracy depends on the free exchange of ideas, where political differences are expressed through peaceful dialogue, debate, and democratic processes, not through fear, violence, or threats to life.

We cannot become a country where death threats are treated as normal, whether they come from public officials, or private individuals. A culture of threats is a threat to democracy itself. It creates fear, silences criticism, discourages people from speaking out, and undermines the peaceful and secure life that every Filipino deserves. No one should fear for their safety for expressing an opinion, demanding truth and accountability, or serving the public.

Senator Risa has consistently stood for human rights, truth, and accountability, and has often been the target of harassment and disinformation. Akbayan stands firmly with Kasamang Risa. We will not be intimidated, and we will continue to defend our democratic space where dissent is protected and public servants can perform their duties without fear. We call on all to reject the politics of violence and uphold justice, respect, and peaceful democratic engagement.

LOLO PEPING! ⚖️🇵🇭

Long before Senator Risa Hontiveros entered the Senate, her grandfather, Justice José Miraflores Hontiveros, had already built a distinguished career in law, government, and the judiciary.

Journalist Pia Hontiveros, Senator Risa’s sister, shared that their “Lolo Peping” topped the 1911 Bar Examination, which was still administered in Spanish, with a rating of 99.69%. Pia described it as the highest grade attained among Bar topnotchers, while explaining that the Supreme Court’s rankings have yet to fully reflect examinees who took the Bar in Spanish.

Justice Hontiveros served as Governor of Capiz from 1916 to 1919 and as a Philippine senator from 1922 to 1928. He later became a justice of the Court of Appeals before President Manuel A. Roxas appointed him Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, where he served from 1946 to 1947.

He also represented Capiz in the 1934 Constitutional Convention, which drafted the 1935 Philippine Constitution.

Happy WPS🇵🇭 Day!

𝗡𝗮𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗡 𝗜𝗧𝗢! 🇵🇭🚣🏾

Isang dekada na mula sa makasaysayang panalo ng Pilipinas sa arbitral ruling ng West Philippine Sea bilang pagtitibay ng ating soberanya at karapatan sa ating mga dagat. Bilang mga Pilipino, ang panalong ito ay nagsisilbing patunay ng pagtindig ng Pilipinas sa pansariling kapayapaan at kalayaan mula sa pilit na pag-angkin ng Tsina ng ating mga katubigan.

Sa kabila ng abanteng ito, nananatiling mapanggipit at marahas ang mga Chinese fishing vessels sa mga mangingisdang Pilipino. Ramdam pa rin ng mga mangingisda sa sikmura ang epekto ng pilit na pagpapalayas ng mga Tsino at pilit na pagtataboy sa mga maliliit na bangka, sapagkat nangangahulugan ito para sa mga mangingisda ng kawalan ng huli o di naman kaya ay limitadong paglaot. Bilang resulta, ito ay nakahabi sa kawalang pangkabuhayan at pagkain ng mga mangingisda at kanilang mga pamilya.

Ngunit nananatiling matibay ang paninindigan na atin ang West Philippine Sea! Sa ika-sampung taong pagdiriwang natin ng anibersaryo ng West Philippine Sea ruling ay kasabay nito ang pagpupunyagi sa ating mga mangingisda na matapang pa ring lumalaot, sa kabila man ng banta ng pananakot at panganib na dala ng presensiya ng malalaking barko ng Tsina. Mataas nating pinagpupugayan ang ating mangingisda bilang nangunguna sa pagtatanggol ng ating karapatan at soberanya sa West Philippine Sea.

Sa pagsulong ng mission, maigting din ang ating panawagan para sa proteksyon ng mga Pilipinong mangingisda, at sa pagpapalakas ng pagbabantay sa ating mga katubigan. Makalipas ang sampung taon ay malinaw pa rin ang ating pinaglalaban: ang isang ligtas at malayang West Philippine Sea na nananatiling atin. ✊⛵

Ten years ago today, the Philippines showed the world what it means to stand up to a giant, and win. The 2016 Hague Ruling still stands, affirming that China’s nine-dash line has absolutely no basis in international law.

Mahalaga na ipagdiwang ang araw na ito dahil hindi tumitigil ang Tsina sa pang-aangkin ng hindi kanya.

Recently, Chinese academics have gone so far as to claim that Batanes belongs to China. This is a grave insult to every Ivatan, to every Filipino, and further proof of how deeply the Chinese government’s propaganda has taken root in its own people.

China’s disinformation campaigns are exactly why the Arbitral Award matters, not only as a landmark ruling etched in the annals of history, but as a shield against those who systematically spread lies.

Let us never forget this victory. Huwag nating kalimutan na lumaban tayo sa isang dambuhala nang mapayapa at may dignidad. Ipagmalaki natin sa buong mundo na ang Pilipinas ay isang bansa na tumindig para sa tama at sa totoo.

The Senate New Majority stands with the families and communities in Mindanao who are now facing the painful work of rescue, relief, rebuilding and recovery after the powerful earthquake.

As a personal contribution to the relief effort, members of the Senate New Majority are prepared to donate one month of our salary to help support affected communities.

While this is a small contribution, we hope our colleagues in the Minority will join us in this effort. After all, we are senators of all Filipino people.

This is a moment when the Senate, whatever its internal divisions, can still speak through one act of shared compassion.
