Journalism Studies Association of the Philippines

Journalism Studies Association of the Philippines JSAP is a SEC-registered non-profit association of Journalism educators BACKGROUNDER
The Journalism Studies Association of the Philippines, Inc. Prof. Lucia P.

(JSAP) stands as a professional and scholarly organization representing journalism educators and student publication advisers across universities, colleges, and secondary schools in both public and private institutions nationwide. Its mandate is twofold: to advance journalism studies and research as an academic discipline, and to advocate for the principles of press freedom and media independence,

particularly in periods of political and social upheaval. The conceptualization of JSAP is attributed to Asst. Tangi, former chair of the University of the Philippines (UP) Department of Journalism, whose sustained research into journalism education revealed the long yet fragmented history of the field in the Philippines. Formal attempts at journalism education began at UP in 1919, less than a decade after the establishment of the first journalism school in the United States in 1908. The University of Santo Tomas (UST) subsequently institutionalized the first undergraduate journalism program in 1929. Despite these early initiatives, successive efforts to organize journalism educators faltered due to limited institutional support and inadequate funding. By 2019, however, the intensifying challenges posed by technological disruption, the proliferation of disinformation, and the deteriorating media environment underscored the urgent need for collective action. JSAP was formally established in October 2019 and launched publicly on March 6, 2020 at the UP College of Mass Communication (now College of Media and Communication). On July 9, 2021, it achieved legal recognition as a non-stock, non-profit corporation registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Since 2021, JSAP has convened annual National Conferences, which have become central to its academic mission. These gatherings—most recently hosted by Quezon City University (2023), UST Manila (2024), and PUP Manila (2025)—serve as platforms for scholarly exchange, pedagogical innovation, and professional networking. Complementing these conferences are seminars and webinars designed to enhance the competencies of journalism educators and campus paper advisers, with particular emphasis on emerging fields such as data journalism, data visualization, and artificial intelligence. Through these initiatives, JSAP consolidates its role as a vital intellectual community committed to strengthening journalism education and safeguarding the democratic role of the press in Philippine society.

CMC Faculty Awarded Prestigious Professorial Chairs

The University of the Philippines College of Media and Communication proudly announces the awarding of the Ramon Cojuangco Professorial Chair to Assistant Professor Lucia Palpal-latoc Tangi, DSD and the Gerry Gil Professorial Chair to Professor Daphne-Tatiana T. Canlas, PhD in recognition of their outstanding scholarship and contributions to media and cultural studies.

Dr. Tangi, of the Department of Journalism will pursue her research, “Cultural Continuity and Political Negotiation: Media, Identity, and Transnational Relations in the Filipino-Chinese Press.” Her study explores how Chinese-language newspapers in the Philippines—from the Chinese Commercial News (1919) to the Fookien Times during Martial Law—served as cultural institutions that sustained heritage, reinforced solidarity, and mediated tensions between assimilation and preservation.

“The Filipino-Chinese press offers a powerful lens into the resilience of minority communities and their negotiation of belonging,” Dr. Tangi noted.

Dr. Canlas of the Department of Broadcast Communication will conduct her research, “Everyday Rhetorics and Filipino American Representation in ICE Raid Discourse.” She examines how Filipino American content creators on Instagram, YouTube, and news outlets represent identity amid violent racial encounters in the U.S., employing rhetorical “listening” to analyze community responses.

“Filipino American content suggests both support for and resistance to ICE raids, reflecting the community’s diverse negotiations of identity,” Dr. Canlas explained.

These awards affirm CMC’s commitment to advancing critical scholarship in media, culture, and representation.

HOLY WEEK RUSH ADVISORY: Scam Watch Pilipinas flags top 4 travel scams as airfare rises ahead of Holy Week travel rush

Scam Watch Pilipinas warned that rising global oil prices driven by escalating tensions in the Middle East are pushing airfare higher, creating a surge in travel-related scams targeting Filipinos searching for cheaper options ahead of the Holy Week travel rush.

The group identified the top four travel scams now circulating more aggressively:

First, fake accommodation schemes involve villas, apartments, or hotel rooms advertised at unusually low prices that turn out to be nonexistent upon arrival despite advance payment. Travelers are advised to book only through verified platforms, check real reviews, contact the hotel directly before paying, and transact using official travel apps instead of website-based URLs.

Second, fake Wi-Fi hotspots in airports, hotels, and tourist areas are used by cybercriminals to steal personal and banking information from unsuspecting travelers. The public is urged to avoid sensitive transactions on public Wi-Fi, use a VPN, and verify network names with staff.

Third, too-good-to-be-true travel deals sent via email, SMS, or social media offer heavily discounted flights and packages that disappear once payment is made. Consumers should verify directly with airlines or hotels, avoid random links and messages, research providers before booking, and use official travel apps when transacting.

Fourth, cheap airline tickets sold on social media by unauthorized individuals or fake agents pressure victims into immediate transactions outside official airline channels. Travelers are reminded to buy only from official airline channels, avoid individual sellers on social media, watch out for urgency tactics, and use official airline or travel apps for bookings.

“Scammers thrive in moments like this. When airfare goes up, people naturally look for cheaper alternatives, and that’s exactly where fraudsters step in,” said Jocel de Guzman, co-founder of Scam Watch Pilipinas.

“These scams are designed to create urgency and lower your guard. If you’re being rushed to pay or the price is far below market, that’s already a red flag,” he added.

Scam Watch Pilipinas urged the public to adopt its as a practical defense against fraud: Magdamot (Be Stingy) by avoiding rushed payments and being cautious with money, Magduda (Doubt) by verifying deals directly with airlines, hotels, or legitimate platforms, Mang-isnab (Ignore) by ignoring suspicious messages, links, and unsolicited offers, and Magsumbong sa 1326 (Report to 1326) by reporting scams through the national anti-scam hotline.

“Awareness is our strongest defense. As travel costs rise, verification and vigilance become even more critical,” de Guzman said.

Scam Watch Pilipinas reminded travelers that while global conditions may affect prices, legitimate deals will always come from verified and official channels, not from pressure-driven offers on social media or messaging platforms.
