𝐁𝐈𝐆 𝐍𝐄𝐖𝐒 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐲!

The Green Choice Philippines (GCP) officially launches the Ecolabelling Criteria for Steel Products — a major milestone towards promoting sustainability and responsible production in the steel sector.

The project was implemented by Phil.Center for Environmental Protection and Sus. Devt.,Inc through the EcoAdvance Project, a collaborative effort between the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), GIZ, and Öko-Institut, receiving financial support from the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMUKN) through the International Climate Initiative (IKI).

Developed through close collaboration with experts, manufacturers, government agencies, and stakeholders, the new criteria ensure that steel products meet standards of quality, safety, and sustainability — aligning with both national regulations and global sustainability goals.

The criteria apply to:
- Flat Steel Products (Roofing)
- Long Steel Products (Rebars and Equal Leg Angle)
- Steel Pipes (BI and GI)
- Structural Shapes (H-Beam, I-Beam, W-Flange, Sheet Piles, Steel Plates)
- Low Relaxation Seven-Wire Steel Strand Prestressed Concrete

𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐡𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 include requirements on 𝘳𝘢𝘸 𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘢𝘭 𝘴𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘤𝘪𝘯𝘨, 𝘭𝘰𝘸 𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘣𝘰𝘯 𝘦𝘮𝘪𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴, and 𝘸𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘦𝘳𝘷𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘮𝘴, ensuring that certified products contribute to a more sustainable construction industry.

The National Ecolabelling Programme - Green Choice Philippines (NELP-GCP) has updated its criteria for Refrigerators and Freezers, in collaboration with GIZ. After comprehensive market research and technical committee consultations, the revised criteria address key aspects such as energy efficiency, packaging, safety, noise management, and environmental impact. This initiative aligns with the Philippines' Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), the Philippine Energy Labelling Program (PELP), and international commitments like the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol.

The new standards aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, eliminate ozone-depleting substances, and promote sustainable refrigeration practices. Manufacturers and importers are encouraged to voluntarily apply for certification under the GCP Ecolabelling Program, demonstrating their commitment to energy efficiency, waste management, and environmentally-sound innovation. This provides a competitive edge, strengthens brand reputation, and opens up new market opportunities in the growing eco-conscious market.
