AFP, RETRACT YOUR FORCES FROM BARMM! END STATE TERROR!
The scale of militarization surrounding the upcoming Bangsamoro Parliamentary Elections this September 14 is deeply concerning. For the first regular election of the Bangsamoro Parliament, the people of BARMM are being asked to participate in a democratic exercise: to cast their votes, choose their representatives, and exercise their political rights.
Yet alongside the ballot boxes, we are seeing an increasingly heavy military presence. Around 11,900 Philippine Army troops are being deployed for election security in BARMM. Additional military assets, including helicopters, artillery systems, and other ground forces, have also been reported as part of the security preparations.
This is not a small matter.
Security is important; we understand that BARMM has a history of armed conflict and that election-related violence is a legitimate concern. However, at what point does “security” begin to create fear among the very people whose democratic participation we are supposed to protect?
THIS IS AN ELECTION, WE ARE NOT GOING TO WAR. Seeing military personnel and heavy equipment surrounding your community may not simply register as “security.” It can bring back painful memories and trauma, especially for the elderly.
Bangsamoro citizens must also be able to exercise that right freely, safely, and without intimidation or fear. We call for election security that genuinely protects voters without creating an atmosphere of fear. The military and police must ensure that their presence does not undermine the very democratic exercise they are tasked to secure. The Bangsamoro people have fought long and hard for the right to determine their own political future.
Bangsamoro is exercising its democratic rights. This act from the AFP undermines the self-determination they long faught for.
PROTECT THE PEOPLE’S RIGHT TO VOTE! LET THE BANGSAMORO PEOPLE VOTE IN PEACE!
