On the Partnerships of Pride PH with Aboitiz Power and the National Youth Commission
Pride should never become an avenue for every entity to redefine or sanitize the very purpose of its existence. It should never serve as a platform for institutions or corporations to cloak themselves in the language of inclusion while remaining unaccountable to the communities affected by their actions.
Novaliches Youth Watch stands with the growing number of organizations and individuals calling for genuine representation and accountability. We join the call to question the organizers of Pride PH for partnering with Aboitiz Power and the National Youth Commission (NYC). These corporations and institutions should not be given a platform that can be used to advance their image while serious questions surrounding their actions and accountability remain unaddressed.
Pride is not merely a celebrationโit is a protest. It has always been a movement that speaks truth to power and fights for social justice. It exists to amplify the voices of the marginalized, not to provide legitimacy to institutions whose actions have been questioned by the very communities that Pride seeks to stand with.
We must not allow the meaning of Pride to be tainted by questionable partnerships. More importantly, we must not allow the struggles and suffering of many Filipinos to be ignored or forgotten in exchange for corporate branding and institutional presence. Pride should remain a space where justice is centered, not where accountability is set aside.
If we go back to the history of why Pride Month exists, we are reminded that it began with the Stonewall Uprising in 1969. Pride was born from resistance. It emerged from the courage of LGBTQIA+ individuals who stood against oppression, discrimination, and police violence. It was never founded as a corporate event or a public relations opportunityโit was, and continues to be, a political act of resistance.
From this militant resistance, it is clear that the rights and freedoms enjoyed by members of the LGBTQIA+ community today were fought for through courage, sacrifice, and collective struggle. These victories were never handed freely; they were won through people who dared to challenge injustice despite violence, intimidation and persecution.
Today's celebration, we stand with those who refuse to accept these partnerships without scrutiny. We join the growing call for transparency, accountability, and adherence to the principles that Pride has long fought to defend.
