A newly elected city official, who currently chairs the Sangguniang Panlungsodβs committee on transportation, has urged tricycle operators or their respective Tricycle Operators and Drivers Association (TODA) to utilize mobile applications, similar to what the TODA federation of this city is doing.
City Councilor Epitacio βJieβ Lao, chairman of the committee on transportation, said that utilizing a mobile application will provide a solution for both tricycle operators and commuters, since he believes this will help eliminate overcharging.
βMaganda talaga yung app (mobile applications). Ang TODA may permit sila at may app na rin sila. Kung may app ang iba ay wala nang tagaan ng tagaan ng presyo. Dapat lahat ng TODA magkaroon ng apps para wala ng reklamo sa mga singilan,β the newly elected councilor proposed.
The streets in Puerto Princesa are dominated by tricycles as its major mode of public transportation, but tricycle operators are confronted by countless complaints by commuters, the most common of which is -- overcharged fares.
In a recent report published in Palawan Daily, some commuters claimed that some unscrupulous tricycle operators are charging an overpriced minimum fare reaching P30 to P50 even for less than a kilometer ride.
The allowed tricycle fare here is P12 based on City Ordinance 1129, but many commuters gave P15 without asking for the P3 change or sukli.
Commuters made public their disgust, claiming that abusive tricycle drivers are in tricycle operators and drivers association (TODA) pick-up areas locally known as paradahan. Trips that are more than three kilometers, however, range from P150 to P200, already considered excessive and exorbitant.
In a paradahan located along Malvar Street, near the old public market, the minimum rate is P80 per trip.
At the height of these complaints against overcharging tricycle drivers, the TODA Federation of Puerto Princesa, an umbrella organization of all TODA in this city, announced that they launched the tricycle booking app in an effort to stop overpricing and overcharging among their ranks.
The mobile application, PPC TODA, which they developed this year, is now operational.
PPC TODA federation president Henry Villamor said that developing this platform has been their solution to end overpricing and overcharging by their fellow tricycle drivers. They also received positive feedback from the public.
βSa PPC TODA App makikita na agad ng pasahero ang pamasahe para wala nang negosasyon at wala nang overcharging,β Villamor said.
The Sangguniang Panlungsod of Puerto Princesa has assisted the TODA federation during the dry run, and later they give them the green light by accrediting the PPC TODA app through a Sanggunian resolution.
Lao is confident that utilizing mobile applications will help address the overcharging issue, benefiting both the tricycle operators, the commuters, and the different TODAs of this city as well.
