The Zamboanga ICT Council presented the current state of the city's ICT-BPM ecosystem at the ICT-BPM Council meeting held on December 9 at the City Hall conference room.

The meeting was presided over by Hon. Mayor Khymer Olaso as the ICT-BPM Council chairperson, and Hon. Councilor Kim Villaflores as Head of the Science and Technology Committee and vice-chairperson of the ICT-BPM Council.

As part of the meeting agenda, we presented the competitiveness of Zamboanga City as a destination for business process outsourcing operations, as well as the current and upcoming office developments suited for BPO operations.

Zamboanga City is ripe and ready for the picking. It is now up to the ICT-BPM council to continue our work of strengthening the foundations to welcome BPO locators to the city.

The Zamboanga ICT Council recently gathered for a productive meeting focused on strengthening our local freelancing ecosystem in partnership with local ICT stakeholders.

One of the key topics we discussed: What programs can truly empower freelancers and encourage more of them to become ZICT members?

A major idea on the table — and something we’re excited about — is the plan to build a 24/7 Community Café / Co-Working Space designed specifically with freelancers in mind.

🚀 Philippine Startups: Innovation at a Crossroads

The report from Gobi Partners contains interesting insights into the Philippine startup ecosystem.

According to the report, the country has entered The Intelligent Age — where AI, automation, and data are driving the next wave of growth. 💡

Despite slower funding, Filipino founders (mostly 21–40 yrs old) are building smarter, more sustainable startups tackling real problems in FinTech, EdTech, AgriTech, and beyond.

Here in Zamboanga City, the momentum is rising.

Zamboanga City and the wider Region IX (Zamboanga Peninsula) are steadily aligning with the national shift toward AI-driven and inclusive innovation, marking their entry into the national innovation wave.

Key developments:

1️⃣ Startup Competitions (DICT IX – Philippine Startup Challenge X):

👉 64 startup entries from Zamboanga Peninsula, Basilan, and Sulu — a record participation.

👉 Winning ideas like OA Knee-mo! (biomedical tech) and Myosug show early diversification into science and tech-based solutions.

2️⃣ Regional Startup Forums (DOST IX, AZUL Hub, JRMSU-SIDLAK):

👉 The 2024 Startup Forum facilitated collaboration among stakeholders, TBIs (Technology Business Incubators), and funding bodies like DOST-PCIEERD, helping startups connect to national resources.

✅ The forum directly supports Gobi’s recommendation for stronger regional participation and scale-up financing access.
