Viva Birhen sa Lourdes ๐ค๐
Today we commemorate the apparition of Our Lady of Lourdes, honoring the 18 appearances of the Blessed Virgin Mary to Saint Bernadette Soubirous in 1858. The apparitions began on February 11 and concluded on July 16, eventually receiving the local bishopโs approval after a four-year inquiry. These events elevated Lourdes to a significant pilgrimage site, with thousands claiming miraculous healing from the spring that Bernadette discovered under the Virginโs guidance. Since 1862, experts have verified 69 cases of healing attributed to the site.
Saint Bernadette was born in 1844 to a mill-working family in Lourdes. Despite a loving home, her family faced economic hardships, losing their mill in 1854 due to her fatherโs injury. Bernadetteโs life was marked by poverty and health issues, including asthma. Her limited education did not hinder her strong commitment to her faith, as she persistently sought to learn the Churchโs teachings. By January 1858, she had returned to her family, living in cramped conditions.
The first apparition occurred on February 11, 1858, when Bernadette went to gather firewood near a grotto. There, she saw a glowing figure in white holding a rosary. Although her companions saw nothing, Bernadette returned to the site and experienced further visions, during which the Virgin Mary urged penance, prayer, and the discovery of the spring. Skeptical onlookers initially ridiculed Bernadetteโs behavior, but interest grew as miraculous healings were reported from the springโs waters.
The Virgin Maryโs identity remained mysterious until March 25, 1858, when she declared herself as โthe Immaculate Conception.โ Bernadette later entered a religious order in central France and remained there until her death in 1879. By that time, a basilica had been built at the site, fulfilling the Virginโs request. The Lourdes apparitions continue to inspire millions of pilgrims and remain a profound testament to faith, healing, and devotion in the Catholic Church.
Our Lady of Lourdes, pray for us!
