SA MARAHAS AT MADUGONG LUPAING NINUNO"

Nagsimula ang komisyon bilang Bureau of Non- Christian Tribes na nilikha ng Insular Government noong Panahon ng Kolonyal ng mga Amerikano sa Pilipinas. Ito ay naging isang independiyenteng ahensya na tinatawag na Commission on National Integration (CNI).

Noong 1972, hinati ni Pangulong Ferdinand Marcos ang CNI sa Southern Philippine Development Authority (SPDA) at ang Presidential Assistance on National Minorities (PANAMIN). Noong 1984, nilikha ni Marcos ang Office of Muslim Affairs and Cultural Communities (OMACC) upang tulungan ang mga minoryang Muslim at di-Muslim.

Noong Enero 1987, inalis ng administrasyon noon ni Pangulong Corazon Aquino ang OMACC at sa pamamagitan ng tatlong Executive Order ay nilikha ang Office for the Muslim Affairs (OMA), ang Office for Northern Cultural Communities (ONCC), at ang Office for Southern Cultural Communities (OSCC).

Noong 1997, nilagdaan noon ni Pangulong Fidel Ramos ang Republic Act 8371 o Indigenous Peoples' Rights Act of 1997, na pinagsanib ang huling dalawang tanggapan, ang Office for Northern Cultural Communities at Office for Southern Cultural Communities sa kasalukuyang komisyon.
