On 𝗙𝗲𝗯𝗿𝘂𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝟭𝟭, 𝟭𝟵𝟴𝟲, 𝗚𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗼𝗿 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗼 𝗕. 𝗝𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗲𝗿 of Antique was shot and killed in San Jose de Buenavista while overseeing the counting of votes during the snap presidential elections. His assassination happened at a tense time in Philippine history and became one of the events that stirred public anger against the dictatorship, helping awaken people’s courage to stand up for democracy just days before the 𝗘𝗗𝗦𝗔 𝗣𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗣𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.

Gov. Javier, born on 𝗢𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟯𝟭, 𝟭𝟵𝟰𝟮, was a lawyer and former governor of Antique who openly opposed political abuse and violence during the authoritarian period. He chose to stand with the people, even when it placed his life in danger. His leadership showed that local leaders can play a big role in defending freedom, truth, and fair elections.

Today, 𝗙𝗲𝗯𝗿𝘂𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝟭𝟭 𝗶𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝘀 𝗚𝗼𝘃. 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗼 𝗕. 𝗝𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗲𝗿 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗔𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗾𝘂𝗲, 𝗔𝗸𝗹𝗮𝗻, 𝗖𝗮𝗽𝗶𝘇, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗜𝗹𝗼𝗶𝗹𝗼. It is a day to honor his sacrifice and to remind Filipinos that democracy is protected by ordinary citizens and leaders who are brave enough to speak out.

On January 23, 1899, the 𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐏𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐩𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜, also known as the Malolos Republic, was formally inaugurated in Malolos, Bulacan, with General Emilio Aguinaldo serving as its first President. This historic event marked the establishment of the first constitutional republic in Asia and demonstrated the Filipino people’s capability to form an independent and sovereign government.

Following Aguinaldo’s return to the Philippines from Hong Kong, plans were laid to establish a Filipino-led government after the defeat of Spanish colonial rule, aiming to assert national independence and self-governance. What began as a revolutionary government later evolved into a constitutional republic founded on the principles of democracy and nationalism.

However, the Malolos Republic was short-lived due to the outbreak of conflict with American forces. The capture of President Emilio Aguinaldo on March 23, 1901, in Palanan, Isabela ultimately led to the dissolution of the First Philippine Republic.
