"It's not where you start... it's how hard you work"

What turns a house into a home? What turns a space into a community?

The Payatas Sports Center started with a dream and a lot of hard work. Like the kids we work with and the community we work in, it did not have the best start. But the potential was there.

Underneath the tough exterior was a space waiting to become a place of laughter, of real effort, and of community.

Here players worked hard towards their own dreams. Here players became youth coaches, role models, and part of something greater.

From a community who had never heard of football before, there are now countless trophies, more than 20 varsity college scholarships, and even national team players. The name Payatas means something more now. More than the dumpsite it was famous for. Payatas is proof of our potential when we provide coaching and mentoring and care.

Thank you to everyone who helped turn an empty space into a place filled with purpose.

Because it was never just a court.

Coaching the Fairplay Way 💙💛

Every great coach starts with the willingness to learn.

This week, our aspiring coaches took their first step through the Coaching Course Level 1. Here, they learned how coaching is so much more than teaching skills or winning games.

At Fairplay, we believe the best coaches are those who create experiences that young people look forward to, relationships built on trust, and opportunities for growth both on and off the court.

Throughout the course, participants explored three simple principles that guide every Fairplay coaches:
- make it fun
- show you care
- show the progress

When children enjoy their sessions, they become excited to come back and learn more. When they feel cared for, they feel safe, valued, and confident to be themselves. And when they can see their progress, no matter how small, they become motivated to keep trying, keep learning, and keep growing.

Most of us don't remember the wins or the trophies or the results. We remember the fun of playing with our friends and how the coach and parents watching made us feel.

We're excited to see these future coaches continue their journey and put these principles into practice, one session, one child, and one positive experience at a time.

MINDFUL MONDAY:

Starting the week with gratitude helps us pause and appreciate the people and moments that truly matter. What about you? What are you grateful for this week?

This week, we asked our Fairplay staff what they’re grateful for, and many of their answers centered on the things that shape our everyday lives—supportive co-workers who make challenges easier, meaningful work that leaves a lasting impact, and family members whose love and presence keep us grounded.

These reminders show us that gratitude isn’t always found in extraordinary moments. Often, it’s found in the people who walk alongside us, the work that gives us purpose, and the relationships that make life meaningful.

Read their full gratitude here:

Jerome:
“I am grateful to my coworkers for adding value to my everyday life.

I am very thankful for having Coach Roy as my mentor, who has been supporting me in every ways he can. I am grateful to Daniella for her leadership that brings improvements to our team. I am thankful to Sid for his valuable support to our team and being a considerate roommate. I am grateful for Jhon Deve for his assistance to our team. I am also grateful to Ate Ipa for the care and support she has given me when I was just a junior staff.

I am thankful to Ate Anne for cooking our dinner and for ensuring that everything is fine at the dorm. I am grateful to Shiela for the number of times she helped me.

I am also thankful to Coach Rona for teaching me the basics of Level 1 and 2 Coaching. I am very grateful to Ate Zargy for her kindness and for being very supportive with my work. My output would be dull if it wasn't for her. I am grateful to Vherise for helping me out with the computer and the fruits. Also, for her presence during spontaneous hangouts. I am grateful to Kuya Ed for helping me out with frustrating budget-related tasks. For Kuya Joel, I am very grateful for his companionship at PSC. My 4 months there would be terrible without him. I am grateful to Ate Mila, Ate Weng, and Ate Cristy for cooking our daily meals. Finally, I am thankful to JV for adding life and colors to Fairplay's publication materials.

I am just grateful to everyone and I hope I also add value to your lives as much as you add value to mine.”

Nanay Weng:
I am grateful for my work because, after nine years, I am still here. Throughout my journey, I have gained countless experiences and learned so many valuable lessons. Every day brings an opportunity to grow, whether by developing new recipes or improving the ones we already have.

One of the things I am most thankful for is the chance to share what I have learned with others. My hope is to pass on these recipes and skills to future café staff so that even when I am no longer here, they can continue making them and serving the community. In that way, I know that I have contributed something meaningful that will continue to help others for years to come.

Ed:
I’am proud and grateful to my family. My daughter just finished her junior high school with honors, all while serving as club president. Watching her balance everything shows me just how independent she’s become.
I won't have a single worry about her future, even her schooling eventually means staying away from us. None of these would be possible without my wife, though. She works tirelessly to sustain the vast majority of our needs, helping our family not just financially but spiritually.

She constantly put the needs of our family far above her own. Between my wife’s unwavering selflessness and the incredible young woman my daughter is becoming, I feel incredibly

👋 STAFF SATURDAY: MEET THE TEAM

Every Saturday, we'll be introducing the people behind Fairplay—the individuals whose passion, dedication, and heart help make our mission possible.

Meet Roy, one of the co-founders of Fairplay.

"Hello, I'm Roy. I came from the UK and co-founded Fairplay all the way back in 2011. Fifteen years later, we have come so far. We have laughed and cried, we have achieved incredible things and made plenty of mistakes. I am proud and thankful for everyone along this journey"

From an idea to a community that continues to grow and create opportunities for others, Roy has been part of the journey every step of the way. His words remind us that every success is built on the people who share the vision, embrace the challenges, and keep moving forward together.
Thank you, Roy, for your leadership, humility, and unwavering belief in what Fairplay can achieve. 💙

Building the Next Generation of Coaches

Every great coach starts as a learner. And every coach continues to learn.

This week, our young coaches took another step in their coaching journey as they begin the Fairplay Level 2 Coaching Course.

Together, they explored the Fairplay Coaching Rules and stories, starting with how to reframe failures into learning opportunities. As ways to help prepare us for something bigger and better.

Now to the practical tests as they are observed and graded on how FUN the session is, how CARING they are, and how they show PROGRESS.

We're excited to see how they develop—not just as coaches, but as mentors, role models, and leaders in their communities.

The future of coaching is in good hands. 💙💛

THROWBACK THURSDAY:

"The Building Changed. The Heart Stayed the Same. “

When we look at these photos, we don't just see a building.

We see years of dreams, laughter, challenges, friendships, and countless young people who walk through these doors looking for a place to belong.

What started as a small space in 2011 slowly became something much bigger than walls and rooms. With every year, every improvement, every volunteer, every supporter, and every young person who believed in what this place could be, the Youth Center continued to grow.

But the most important thing never changed.
It was never about the building.

It was about the children who found a safe place to learn. The youth who discovered their potential. The friendships formed around tables, books, computers, games, and conversations. The community that chose to build something meaningful together.

Today, as we look at where we started and where we are now, we are filled with gratitude.

To everyone who donated, volunteered, worked, believed, showed up, and became part of this story—thank you.

This transformation belongs to all of us.

Here's to 15 years of community, growth, hope, and countless stories still waiting to be written.
