On September 15, Justice Japar Babay Dimaampao took his oath of office as the newest member of the Supreme Court. He was appointed by President Duterte last July 2 although his appointment papers were only released on September 14. He is the second Muslim Justice of the Supreme Court after Justice Abdulwahid Bidin.

Justice Dimaampao chaired the recent Sharia'h bar examinations. He is also regarded as an expert in taxation law. As a Court of Appeals Justice and often at the endorsement of various law and civic organizations, he applied for a number of vacancies at the Supreme Court for several years. His name has been included in numerous shortlists prepared by the Judicial & Bar Council for vacancies at the Supreme Court since 2016. Known to be well-liked by Court of Appeals justices and employees, law students, and bar reviewees, court watchers have often wondered why his appointment has been elusive. Until now.

The Supreme Court has released the grading system for the 2020/21 bar exams which retains the same 75% weighted average requirement and the same weight assignment to each bar subject as in previous exams.

The old requirement under Rule 138 that an examinee not have any grade lower than 50 in any subject appears to have been left out. As well, it appears that in lieu of a list of 10 or 20 examinees with the highest weighted average, only those with a weighted average of at least 85% will be cited for exemplary performance.
