WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY 2026 |

The Earth is sending signals.

In the Philippines, our wetlands hear these signals first. These wetlands absorb the force of storms, store floodwaters, and sustain biodiversity and livelihoods. Yet many of these ecosystems are disappearing just when we need them most.

But there is another signal rising.

Wetland conservation taking root across the country. Communities restoring and protecting critical habitats. Scientists and conservationists advancing research and monitoring. Partners strengthening environmental education and stewardship. Local champions working to safeguard the wetlands that sustain both people and biodiversity.

These are the signals of hope. These are the signals of action.

Every restored wetland is a signal.
Every protected shoreline is a signal.
Every voice raised for nature is a signal.

This World Environment Day, let us listen to what our wetlands are telling us: climate action is not a future task, but a present responsibility.

The signals are clear. What comes next is up to us.

Conserve wetlands.
Restore ecosystems.
Act .

Forging Guardians of the Verde Island Passage: Basic Coastal Law Enforcement Training Underway for Tingloy
—-
Today, a powerful wave of change is sweeping through Tingloy! Dedicated community members are diving into the Basic Coastal Law Enforcement Training (BCLET), to be transformed into guardians of their precious coastal and marine treasures.

This isn't just a training; it's an empowerment journey. Participants will improve their knowledge on environment, biodiversity, ecosystems, fisheries laws, and lawful enforcement procedures.

They'll learn crucial skills in evidence handling, ethical conduct, and sustainable resource management, all while understanding the vital connection between a thriving marine ecosystem and their community's prosperity—from abundant fisheries and food security to burgeoning tourism and sustainable livelihoods.
Through dynamic lectures, engaging discussions, and hands-on practical exercises, these future Bantay Dagat members are being equipped to fearlessly enforce national and local fishery and coastal and marine resources laws, conduct lawful operations with confidence, champion case filing and prosecution, and become the ultimate stewards of our invaluable coastal and marine environment.

This groundbreaking initiative is led by the Society for the Conservation of Philippine Wetlands (SCPW), supported by the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), and part of the GEF-funded UNEP-UNOPS "Implementing the South China Sea Strategic Action Program" Project—a collaborative effort spanning Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam. As two of the key Coral Reef Project Sites in the Philippines, Tingloy and Mabini are at the forefront of this global mission.

Together, we are forging a formidable, disciplined, and legally empowered Bantay Dagat force. They are the unwavering protectors committed to safeguarding the marine resources in Tingloy, Mabini, and the majestic Maricaban Strait's, all situated within the Verde Island Passage (VIP), widely recognized by marine scientists around the world as the Center of the Center of Global Marine Shorefish Biodiversity. Together, we are ensuring a vibrant and prosperous legacy for every generation to come!

On 25 May 2026, the Society for the Conservation of Philippine Wetlands, Inc., together with Laguna de Bay stakeholders, celebrated the 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐁𝐢𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐃𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 at the Panguil River Eco Park.

Anchored on this year’s theme, “𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐋𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐆𝐥𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐥 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭,” the celebration highlighted the biodiversity of Laguna de Bay and emphasized the importance of collective local action in protecting and sustaining wetlands and fisheries resources for future generations.

The event also served as avenue to proceed to the next stage of the 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐅𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐠 𝐅𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐅𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐨𝐥𝐤 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦 which included the drafting of the curriculum and setting the dates for its implementation.

Young fisherfolk, together with experienced fisherfolk, representatives from the Local Government Unit, and the Laguna Lake Development Authority (Official), actively participated in identifying relevant topics that will strengthen sustainable fisheries practices and community resilience. These include fisheries laws and governance, youth participation in conservation, responsible fishing practices, sustainable aquaculture, financial literacy, cooperative models, utilization of invasive species as alternative livelihood, and access to government and NGO support.

Through collaboration and shared action, communities around Laguna de Bay continue to prove that local initiatives can create meaningful global impact for biodiversity conservation and sustainable development.

From supporting sustainable farming and responsible fisheries to protecting natural habitats and backing local conservation efforts, our everyday choices create a ripple effect that helps preserve biodiversity and strengthen ecosystems for future generations.

Today, we celebrate the 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐁𝐢𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐃𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 to further strengthen local action.

This year's theme, “𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐠𝐥𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐥 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭,” reminds us that protecting the planet’s vital ecosystems doesn't just happen at global summits—it happens in our communities, our farms and coastal waters, and our daily habits.

In line with this celebration and the call to transform local action into global impact, the 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐅𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐠 𝐅𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐅𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐨𝐥𝐤 under the 𝐋𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐋𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐬 𝐁𝐢𝐨𝐝𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 (𝐋𝐋𝐁𝐂𝐏) is currently ongoing, empowering local communities with knowledge and practices that promote biodiversity conservation, food security, climate resilience, and sustainable livelihoods.

On 12 May 2025, farmers, fisherfolk, youth, and key stakeholders gathered at the Candaba Trade Center in Pampanga for the launching and orientation of the Sustainable Future Training Program under the Living Lakes Biodiversity and Climate Project (LLBCP).

The activity marked an important step toward empowering the youth and local communities through environmental education, sustainable agriculture, and community-based ecotourism—highlighting that protecting wetlands also means protecting livelihoods, food security, and biodiversity.

Participants engaged in meaningful discussions and collaborative capacity needs assessment workshop, sharing local knowledge and experiences that will shape a responsive and community-driven training curriculum. From climate-resilient farming practices and adaptive fishing methods to innovative livelihood opportunities such as farm tourism, access to new markets, value-adding activities, the event emphasized practical solutions rooted in both tradition and innovation.

Through the guidance of SCPW, Inc. and Living Lakes Biodiversity and Climate Project, the program aims to train a new generation of young farmers and fisherfolk—equipping them with the skills, knowledge, and mindset to become stewards of the Paligui Wetlands.

This initiative also strengthens partnerships among local government units, people’s organizations, and environmental stakeholders—working together toward a shared vision: a thriving wetland ecosystem and resilient communities.
