‘THERE’S NO MORE HIDING BEHIND THE CURTAINS OF THE SENATE’

DILG Secretary Jonvic Remulla shared that he and Senate President Alan Cayetano had a heated exchange before arresting Senator Jinggoy Estrada inside the chamber on Monday.

“He [Cayetano] was insisting that nobody could be arrested inside the Senate. He was requesting that he [Estrada] be brought out of the Senate first. And I said, ‘I’m sorry, sir. You lost that privilege when Senator Bato escaped. We will arrest him now,’” he recalled in a press conference earlier.

A video of the incident showed Cayetano arguing with Remulla, saying authorities should enforce Sandiganbayan’s arrest order and read Estrada his constitutional rights outside the Senate.

“Sir, just outside the gate, we’re gonna walk five minutes. This is the Senate of the Philippines! It’s never been done. It’s never been done!” Cayetano remarked.

The police still proceeded with the reading of Miranda rights before Estrada, who cooperated and went to CIDG at Camp Crame for standard booking procedures.

Estrada, who is now at the New Quezon City Jail in Payatas, faces graft and non-bailable plunder charges over alleged illicit budget insertions and P573-million kickbacks from flood control projects.

'YOU LOST THAT PRIVILEGE WHEN SENATOR BATO ESCAPED'

DILG Secretary Jonvic Remulla told Senate President Alan Peter Cayetano that he lost the privilege to put senators under his protective custody after he let Sen. Bato dela Rosa leave the premises.
