Youth for Just Transition - Y4JT

Youth for Just Transition - Y4JT Forging a path towards a transition to a sustainable future that leaves no one behind.

The Youth for Just Transition (Y4JT) aims to further the youth agenda in battling climate change and advocating for a just transition in the Philippines. FES Philippines formed the Youth for Just Transition (Y4JT) network to bring together youth organizations and lay down a path towards transitioning to a sustainable future that doesnโ€™t leave anyone behind. The network consists of youth from diffe

rent sectors such as students, young professionals, young trade unionists, q***r advocates, youth organizers, and climate advocates. As a very diverse network, it integrates sector-specific issues to redefine what their just transitions are. It provides a new avenue for young people to understand their intersectionalities with climate and social justice as it pushes for climate solutions that are democratic and just.

โ€” Nestie Villaviray (National Chairperson, Model SK Network)
during his presentation at the Y4JT Local Conference of Youth - Philippines 2024

Nestie Villaviray served as one of the panelists at the Y4JT Local Conference of Youth - Philippines 2024, held on October 25-27, just after the onslaught of Typhoon Kristine. In his presentation, he also urged the youth, particularly SK leaders, to form alliances to pressure higher officials into enacting laws and ordinances by adopting resolutions, filing ordinances, and creating manifestos or position papers. He also suggested that if suitable candidates are lacking in elections, the youth should consider running for office and becoming advocates for the change they want to see in government.

The Local Conference of Youth (LCOY) is a program under YOUNGO, the youth constituency of the UNFCCC, aimed at promoting youth climate action and contributing to global discussions. This year, LCOY Philippines 2024 will focus on the vital role of young people in achieving a just transition amid the challenges of COP29 and Industry 4.0, addressing the connections between climate change and various sectors like energy, health, agriculture, and governance. The Youth for Just Transition Network (Y4JT) is the organizing body for the event.
