Sharing Our History, Building Our Future! 🏗️

Travel back to 1913, a critical year when the San Juan de Dios Hospital School of Nursing was established! 📜

As seen in this historic photo, the institution was built on a groundbreaking partnership between the spiritual guidance of the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul and the professional vision of Dr. Benito Valdez. They pioneered the rigorous three-year Graduate in Nursing (G.N.) program, successfully blending the Hospital's dedication to compassionate service with a new standard of scientific excellence.

This powerful collaboration is the blueprint for the modern San Juan de Dios Educational Foundation Inc.. We are now keeping that legacy alive with a bold dream: the 10-storey "Miracle Building"!

This proposed structure will physically unify the College and the Hospital, merging our educational services and healthcare services into one state-of-the-art campus. It is the ultimate realization of the mission begun in 1913—to produce healthcare professionals guided by both academic rigor and compassionate care.

The incredible story of Manuel L. Quezon and Dr. Gregorio Singian at the Hospital de San Juan de Dios is more than just history—it's the blueprint for our future!

Quezon himself recounted being "admitted free of charge at San Juan de Dios hospital" and Dr. Singian taking him into his home "until I got well" (Quezon, My Autobiography). This profound, life-saving charity forged a relationship that now inspires our boldest vision yet: the "Miracle Building." 🏥🎓

This proposed 10-story mixed-use structure isn't just a building; it's the physical embodiment of our 400-year mission:

Healthcare & Education Unified: Seamlessly integrating San Juan de Dios Hospital and San Juan de Dios College, this building will be where students learn, train, and practice, forging excellence and compassionate service.

Paying Forward the Grace: Just as Quezon received life-saving care, the Miracle Building will provide state-of-the-art facilities to train new Filipino medical professionals, multiplying our impact across generations.

The Legacy of Dr. Singian: We honor "El Mago de Bisturi" by combining both arms of SJDEFI, ensuring his dedication to expert practice and mentorship lives on.

The Miracle Building is our promise: that the profound, life-altering charity once afforded to a sick soldier will continue to be the foundation for the future of Philippine medicine and education.

The Hospital de San Juan de Dios in Intramuros holds a special place in Philippine history, not only as one of the country’s earliest centers of healing and compassion but also as a formative ground for two of our nation’s great reformists.

Dr. José Protacio Rizal, the national hero, received his four-year practical medical training at the Hospital de San Juan de Dios while completing his studies in medicine at the University of Santo Tomas. It was within these halls that Rizal honed his skills in caring for the sick — an experience that deepened his understanding of human suffering and strengthened his resolve to serve his fellowmen.

Similarly, Graciano López Jaena, the fiery journalist and reformist from Iloilo, once walked the same corridors. Though his mother wished him to enter the priesthood, López Jaena followed his passion for medicine and sought admission to the University of Santo Tomas. When circumstances prevented him from pursuing formal studies, he was appointed as an apprentice at the Hospital de San Juan de Dios, where he gained firsthand experience in medical practice and service to others.

Their shared connection with San Juan de Dios stands as a testament to the hospital’s enduring legacy - a place where compassion, learning, and service have long intertwined to shape individuals who would one day heal not only bodies but the nation itself.

Alam niyo ba? (Did you know?) As early as 1927, Dr. Honoria Acosta Sison—the Philippines' first female physician—was already a pioneering contributor to The Bulletin of the San Juan de Dios Hospital. Her work, featured in our very first publications, helped shape the future of medicine in the country.

Today, we honor this legacy by building the future. The new Miracle Building will be a 10-story hub where hospital services and our college campus converge. This is where the next generation of medical trailblazers will train, ensuring that the same spirit of excellence and innovation that Dr. Sison embodied continues to thrive for generations to come.
