In Memory of Roy "Bangis" Enriquez
The Iceman Who Helped Build the Foundation of Philippine Ice Hockey

Every sport has its stars.
But behind every successful program are the quiet buildersโ€”people whose names may never appear in record books, yet whose dedication makes every achievement possible.
For Philippine ice hockey, Roy "Bangis" Enriquez was one of those builders.
The global ice hockey community joins the Philippine hockey family in mourning the loss of a pioneer, mentor, craftsman, coach, and friend. His passing marks the end of an era, but his legacy will forever remain woven into the fabric of Philippine hockey.
Long before the Philippines became a member of the International Ice Hockey Federation.
Long before Filipino players proudly wore the national jersey in international tournaments.
Long before medals, championships, and international recognition became a reality, Roy Enriquez was already helping lay the foundation of a sport that was still finding its place in the country.
At the original ice rink in SM Southmall, where organized ice hockey in the Philippines first took root, Roy worked as an iceman. While players chased pucks and dreamed of victories, he quietly prepared and maintained the ice beneath their skates. It was demanding work that rarely drew attention, but Roy understood something many overlookedโ€”that great hockey begins with great ice.
Every practice, every game, every first stride taken by aspiring players started on a sheet of ice he meticulously cared for.
Yet Roy's contribution extended far beyond maintaining the rink.
At a time when specialized hockey knowledge was scarce in the Philippines, he became the country's most trusted expert in skate sharpening and blade maintenance. His understanding of blade profiles, hollow depths, edge control, and precision sharpening became indispensable to generations of hockey players and figure skaters alike.
Athletes placed their confidence in Roy because they knew that every sharpened blade reflected his meticulous craftsmanship and pride in his work.
For countless players, success began long before the opening faceoff. It began in Roy's workshop.
When he laced up his own skates, however, the craftsman became an artist.
Known affectionately throughout the hockey community as "Bangis," Roy possessed exceptional stickhandling ability, remarkable vision, and a creativity that inspired everyone who played alongside him. During a time when few Filipino players had access to elite coaching or overseas development, Roy proved that skill, hockey sense, and excellence could be cultivated through passion, discipline, and an unwavering commitment to learning the game.
To many young players, he wasn't simply someone to admire.
He was someone to emulate.
Like so many pioneers of his generation, Roy dreamed of seeing the Philippines earn its place in the international hockey community. He hoped that one day he would wear the Philippine jersey and represent his country on the world stage.
That opportunity never came during his playing career.
Instead of allowing disappointment to define him, Roy chose something greater.
He devoted himself to building a future where others could achieve the dream he never had the chance to realize.
Today, the Philippines proudly competes under the banner of the International Ice Hockey Federation. Filipino athletes now wear the national colors with pride in international competition โ€” a reality made possible by the sacrifices, perseverance, and vision of pioneers like Roy Enriquez.
While he never represented the Philippines as a national team player, his influence is present in every player who now has that privilege.
His legacy is measured not by goals scored or trophies won, but by lives shaped.
It lives in the countless skates he sharpened.
In every sheet of ice he prepared.
In every young player he encouraged.
In every coach he inspired.
And in every Filipino who now proudly calls themselves a hockey player.
Perhaps nothing captured Roy's character more than the way he spent his final chapter. Even after decades of service to the game, he remained committed to developing young athletes, generously sharing his knowledge, experience, and love for hockey with the next generation.
He never stopped giving.
He never stopped teaching.
He never stopped believing in what Philippine hockey could become.
Roy never sought recognition or applause.
He simply showed up.
Day after day.
Year after year.
He did whatever the game needed.
That quiet dedication became one of the cornerstones upon which Philippine hockey was built.
As we mourn his passing, we also celebrate an extraordinary life lived in service to others.
We extend our deepest condolences to his beloved wife, Bel V. Enriquez, his sons JV Enriquez, Patrick Roy Enriquez, and Jaromir Jagr Enriquez, and to their entire family. May they find comfort in knowing that Roy's influence reached far beyond his own home and touched an entire hockey community that will forever be grateful for his life and service.
Roy Enriquez leaves behind far more than memories.
He leaves behind a thriving hockey community.
He leaves behind generations of players whose journeys began because of his dedication.
He leaves behind a dream that became reality.
He maintained the ice.
He sharpened the blades.
He mentored the players.
He believed in Philippine hockey long before the world did.
And because he believed, generations of Filipinos now skate farther than he ever could have imagined.
Rest in peace, Roy "Bangis" Enriquez.
The ice you cared for became the foundation upon which a nation built its hockey dreams.
Every Filipino who proudly wears the national jersey today skates on the path you helped create.
Your work lives on.
Your spirit lives on.
Your legacy will forever skate with Philippine ice hockey.

The love for the game.

Because when we enjoy what we do, we play freer, react faster, and grow stronger in the crease.

Hockey Philippines proudly introduces the official Learn to Play logo and our newest team members โ€” Liksi and Ligaya!

Meet Liksi ๐Ÿถ
