SDGs in the City: Manila

SDGs in the City: Manila The United Nations is celebrating its 75th Anniversary this year. It's a global platform for your voices to be heard on a world stage. The future we want?

"Light It Forward" is an ambitious digital campaign inviting people to assemble hand-built solar lights that are designed into the largest solar-powered artworks in the world to reinvigorate efforts to take action on the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Did you know that the Philippines was one of only four (4) Asian pioneering signatories to the original charter? Many events were planned to comm

emorate this milestone and to call for continued support for the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs), but it's been challenging to engage youth who have been isolated in their homes for more than a year. In July 2020, we launched a digital campaign called "Light It Forward" (www.LightItForward.ph) where we invited thousands of youth to build solar lamps for communities without light, all from the safety of home. The hand-built lights are then gathered and made into large-scale solar artworks around Metro Manila, with ONLY 10-15 artists and participants on-site to comply with all the health and safety protocols. Since we launched, our campaign has counted on the support of 300 celebrities, influencers, and artists, with an estimated total fan base of 30 million supporters. as well as over 3,000 individuals and 500 government officials from across the Philippines who all signed on to the challenge to build our simple solar lights from the safety of home. More importantly, we've helped to empower the lives of over 20,000 Filipino families - almost 100,000 people! We have been given an opportunity to activate Filipino youth through the Youth4Climate: Driving Ambition program at the Pre-COP26 hosted by Italy in September and the global climate change conference (COP-26) meetings hosted by the UK in November. Through large-scale participative solar artworks that we will unveil at landmarks throughout Metro Manila, we are showing how grassroots actions can amplify the voices of our youth take action on the SDGs. We are building one large-scale solar artwork for each of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals each month. Our next artwork is for SDG #13: Climate Action, which we will unveil on July 4. And we want to hear from you. Want to know how to participate? Here are three simple ways to add your voice to the campaign:

1) Sign up for our Light It Forward challenge by ordering your solar lighting kit from LAZADA https://tinyurl.com/1LL-Lazada

2) Build a solar light for a family without electricity - it only takes 30 minutes of your time and will last for 5 years!

3) Upload a video of your building a solar light on social media, share your message (30 characters or less) on how you want to drive action for climate change, and tag us at , , , - we’ll amplify your message in our next installation! Each and every one of us has a responsibility to do our part. We cannot wait to take action. We have the power to do something about it now.
