“Teacher, I’ve read so many books
but I’ve forgotten most of them. So what’s the point of reading?”

That was the question of a curious student to his Master. The teacher didn’t answer. He just looked at him in silence.

A few days later, they were sitting by a river, suddenly, the old man said:
“I’m thirsty. Bring me some water
but use that old strainer lying there on the ground.”

The student looked confused. It was a ridiculous request. How could anyone bring water in a strainer full of holes?

But he didn’t dare argue.

He picked up the strainer and tried.
Once. Twice. Over and over again

He ran faster, angled it differently, even tried covering holes with his fingers. Nothing worked. He couldn’t hold a single drop.

Exhausted and frustrated, he dropped the strainer at the teacher’s feet and said:
“I’m sorry. I failed. It was impossible.”

The teacher looked at him kindly and said:
“You didn’t fail. Look at the strainer.”

The student glanced down
 and noticed something.
The old, dark, dirty strainer was now shining clean. The water, though it never stayed, had washed it over and over until it gleamed.

The teacher continued:
“That’s what reading does. It doesn’t matter if you don’t remember every detail. It doesn’t matter if the knowledge seems to slip through, like water through a strainer

Because while you read, your mind is refreshed.
Your spirit is renewed.
Your ideas are oxygenated.
And even if you don’t notice it right away, you’re being transformed from the inside out.”

That’s the true purpose of reading.
Not to fill your memory

but to cleanse and enrich your soul.

Hibla Lokal Session 2: "Let the little kids enjoy their childhood. Don't burden them with the weight of growing up too soon. Let them play, imagine, and explore without the pressure of adult worries, because childhood is a precious time that can only be experienced once in a lifetime." As the phrase goes, "Minsan lang silang maging bata..."
We're grateful to our energetic and knowledgeable speakers, Ms. Daisy Lunday, Ms. Erenie C. Ameling, and Ms. Geraldine Bulayang, whose expertise made this session a success. Their valuable insights undoubtedly enriched the discussion on nurturing children's well-being and allowing them to cherish their childhood moments.

"When trash transforms into treasure, what a wondrous world it would be!"
On September 6, 2025, BN Paracelis embarked on a journey of discovery with Hibla Lokal 2025's "Reading the Future" initiative. Fifteen bright minds from elementary and secondary schools gathered for Session 1, where the enchanting story of "Messy Lala" or "Lala Burara" sparked a conversation about the importance of nurturing a clean and healthy environment.
Ms. Vicky T. Tamang, AO II of the school, captivated the hearts of the young audience when she read the story of the day's session. . The workshop, "Transforming Trash to Wonders: A Recycling Journey for You and Me," was a resounding success, thanks to the guidance of esteemed Resource Speaker Ms. Gloria R. Beluan and the collaborative efforts of participants and facilitators, including Ms. Lilia O. Ilacad, Ms. Sharon B. William, Ms. Aida L. Langbisan, the School Head, and Area Coordinator Ms. Lani B. Langbisan.
To deepen the participants experience of a clean and healthy environment, a clean-up drive was conducted, instilling a deeper appreciation of the beauty of the environment.

"Sug-alaw: A grand encounter of stories, cultures, and communities"
The Book Nook Conference 2025!

It's not just a conference, but a remarkable experience and a privilege to meet the amazing people behind the successful Book Nook Project 2021.

Kudos to the National Book Development Board for hosting an outstanding conference that unites individuals from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao who share a common passion for fostering a love for reading and books among Filipinos.

This gathering offers a tremendous opportunity for participants to learn, grow, and connect with like-minded individuals, reinforcing the idea that education is a lifelong journey. May this activity ignite every participant's passion for achieving the project's vision and create more opportunities for communities across the Philippines to establish their own book nooks, especially in rural areas."

That’s a wrap!

Our Book Nook Conference 2025 has concluded. But while our three-day event is over, our commitment to strengthening a culture of readership among our communities remains as steadfast as ever.

Today, we will head back to our respective regions, cities, barangays, and local Book Nook sites equipped with fresh learnings, new innovative practices, and a renewed drive to stay true to our project motto: aklat para sa lahat (books for everyone).

On behalf of the entire National Book Development Board family, we would like to thank all our participants, resource speakers, and our Book Nook partners and area coordinators for their unwavering support of our initiatives. Let us continue to work together to accomplish our goal of building a reading nation — one Book Nook site at a time.

See you again next year!

Madamo gid nga salamat! Maraming salamat po!
