I joined the Philippine Red Cross to gain experience and practice my nursing skills, but I did not anticipate how much it would ignite my passion for helping others. Despite the responsibilities of being a single mother, I am grateful to participate in activities with a community that shares a common goal of serving our "kapwa".

It is a privilege to be part of an organization where kindness, compassion, and care make such a significant impact on people from all walks of life. I am honored to be of service alongside such a dedicated team. ❀

My name is Ronlab Labeta, 27 years oldβ€”a simple volunteer who chose to serve not for recognition, but for a higher purpose: to help others and save lives.

My journey began in 2013 as a volunteer with the Philippine Red Cross ParaΓ±aque Branch. I was young then, full of dreams but lacking experience. However, one life-changing event shaped who I am todayβ€”responding to the victims of Typhoon Yolanda in Leyte. It was there that I witnessed the true meaning of sacrifice, resilience, and compassion. In the midst of destruction and grief, I learned that even the simplest act of help can bring hope to someone who has lost everything.

From that moment on, I never looked back. I continued to serve as an Emergency Vehicle Operator (EVO) of an ambulance, a Safety Service Instructor, and at times, an EMS Crew member. Every siren I sound is not just a signal of emergencyβ€”it is a reminder that a life is waiting, a family is praying, and there is a chance for me to change someone’s fate.

This path is not easy. It comes with exhaustion, risks, and sacrifices. But with every life I help, every patient I safely transport, and every smile I witness after a battle for survivalβ€”every hardship turns into a deep sense of fulfillment and purpose.

Until now, I choose to remain a volunteer. Not because I have no other options, but because this is what my heart has chosen. For me, true wealth is not measured by money, but by the number of lives you touch and the hope you give.

I am Ronlab Labetaβ€”a volunteer, a servant, and living proof that true heroism begins with a simple decision to help others. ❀

I joined the PH Red Cross because someone encouraged me to. At first, I said no because I was busy with school and work. I didn’t think I could do it. But later on, I decided to try volunteering, like what people say, you’ll never know unless you try, and that’s what I did.

As time went by, I started to enjoy volunteering. It wasn’t something I expected at first, but I found myself wanting to stay and be part of it. Helping people, being there when they need support, it slowly became something important to me.

Now, it’s been three years. And honestly, I can say that I really love being a Red Cross volunteer. There’s a simple kind of happiness in helping others, especially those who really need it. It’s something that stayed with me. ❀

World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day – May 8, 2026

Every May 8, we celebrate World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day, a global occasion that honors the humanitarian principles of compassion, unity, and service to humanity.

This date was chosen to mark the birth anniversary of Henry Dunant (1828), founder of the International Committee of the Red Cross and the first recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. His vision continues to inspire millions of volunteers and staff worldwide who dedicate themselves to protecting life, alleviating suffering, and upholding human dignity.

This year’s theme: "United in Humanity" celebrates the volunteers and staff who stand alongside communities in times of crisis β€” not as outsiders, but as part of them. In an increasingly complex and divided world, they turn compassion into action, offering hope, dignity, and support when it matters most.

Today, the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement is the world’s largest humanitarian network, comprising 191 National Societies working together to save lives, build community resilience, strengthen localization, and promote dignity around the world.

World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day is both a tribute to their unwavering commitment and a solemn moment to remember those who have lost their lives in service of others. It is also a call to uphold and protect humanitarian action, ensuring that neutral, independent, and impartial support continues to reach those most in need, wherever they are.

Joining the Red Cross Youth is one of the most unexpected moments for me. It was never planned nor intentional. It just came, then happened. But along the way, narealize ko na baka hindi naman talaga sya "Unplanned".

Maybe it was meant for me all alongβ€”to serve and be there for others, to volunteer without expecting anything in return, and to find fulfillment in life.

What started as something accidental turned into something meaningful. We must always embrace the unexpected moments in our lives, because they can lead us to a greater purpose. ❀

Being part of Philippine Red Cross has changed my perspective. More than just the tasks we do, it’s about the smiles we share and the lives we touch. Masarap sa pakiramdam (It feels good) to know that even a small effort can make a big difference for someone else.

I joined the PH Red Cross hoping to gain experience, help people, and explore opportunities but along the way, it became something deeper.

In every small act of service, I learned how to care with my whole heart. It’s not always easy, but seeing someone feel safe, and helped brings light and relief to my heart. It makes me feel fulfilled in simple but meaningful ways.

I also met co-volunteers who slowly became like family. We support each other through long hours, challenges, and growth.

More than anything, this journey taught me to just keep showing up and helping people the best way I can, with sincerity and care.

Being an ardent advocate of the Red Cross & Red Crescent Movement, through my active deployment with the PH Red Cross is my way of showing that my community, my city, and my country matters that much to me in solidarity with the Global movement.

My Red Cross deployment is a concrete way for me to love God's people by attending to and promoting the public interest in Health Care, both in normal times as well as medical emergencies and disaster outbreaks. What happens to all, especially to those considered the least of society's concerns, is my concern whether I acknowledge it or not. Doing so makes me truly Human.

I strive to be part of a meaningful legacy of being fully human, community engaging, yet strategically global in responsiveness and outlook together with my PH Red Cross comrades and the Movement in general. ❀
