Earth Island Institute is an international environmental organization that includes the Dolphin Safe Tuna label. EII promotes awareness, grassroots environmentalism and activism for the protection, conservation and restoration of nature. Earth Island Institute was founded in San Francisco, USA in 1982 by well-known American environmentalist David Brower. Brower, together with other visionary and d

edicated environmental activists created a nimble, streamlined organization to support the work of bold individuals with big ideas on how to restore, preserve and nurture the environment. Earth Island grows environmental leadership through education and activism. Our projects, publications, and initiatives support the biological and cultural diversity that sustain the environment. THE INTERNATIONAL MARINE MAMMAL PROJECT

One of the first projects spearheaded by Earth Island is the International Marine Mammal Project (IMMP), dedicated to make the oceans safe for all marine mammals, as well as marine ecosystems on which they depend. The IMMP leads the global effort to stop the slaughter of dolphins, end commercial whaling, end the use of driftnets and other destructive fishing practices and to protect key whale and dolphin habitats. THE DOLPHIN-SAFE PROJECT

In 1986, the IMMP developed a campaign to press tuna companies to end the practice of intentionally chasing and netting dolphins with purse seine nets and to adopt "dolphin-safe" fishing practices to prevent the drowning of dolphins in tuna nets. Evolving into one of the largest private food monitoring systems in the world, the IMMP deploys staff monitors all over the world to work with tuna companies, import associations, fishing fleets, canners and brokers to ensure that each company adopt dolphin-safe policies. EARTH ISLAND INSTITUTE PHILIPPINES

In the Philippines, Earth Island Institute implements the International Monitoring Program (IMP) which monitors the biggest tuna companies in the region, ensuring that fishing operations conform to the highest standards of sustainability. The EII-Phils likewise maintains an on-board monitoring program for all tuna fishing companies. CAMPAIGNS

EII-Phils regularly undertakes campaigns aimed to educate the public about animal welfare and the environment. EII-Phils, together with other environmental and animal welfare organizations, lead campaigns against dolphin captivity to enlighten the public about the cruelty of keeping intelligent animals such as dolphins for human amusement. EII-Phils partners with communities in the Philippines in promoting grassroots environmentalism. We are in solidarity with farmers, fisherfolk and indigenous peoples as they reclaim and restore the commons. EII-Phils is also part and convenor of SAVE FREEDOM ISLAND MOVEMENT that aims to restore and protect Freedom Island Bird Sanctuary (Las Pinas-Paranaque Critical Habitat & Eco-tourism Area) against threats of relentless garbage disposal in Manila Bay and the impending reclamation project of the PRA that will destroy the area's ecosystem. is also a partner organization of NILAD, a regional network of volunteers, groups, clubs, associations, environmental protection advocates and individuals who are working to preserve, restore, and promote the protection of ecological (integrity) balance, bio-diversity & sustainable development of Metro Manila. EII VOLUNTEERS

๐Ÿข Sea turtles have existed for more than 100 million years, meaning they once shared the Earth with dinosaurs.

๐Ÿข Female sea turtles often return to the very same beach where they were born to lay their eggs.

๐Ÿข Out of the seven species of sea turtles in the world, five can be found in the Philippines.

This World Turtle Day, letโ€™s reduce plastic use, protect coastal habitats, and speak up for marine biodiversity. Every small action counts! ๐Ÿขโœจ

Biodiversity is not just about saving wildlife. Itโ€™s about protecting the balance of life itself. ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ ๐ŸŒŠ๐ŸŒ

Forests, oceans, mangroves, coral reefs, pollinators, and wildlife all work together to keep ecosystems healthy and communities alive. But today, biodiversity is under threat from deforestation, pollution, destructive development, overfishing, climate change, and unsustainable consumption.

When ecosystems collapse, people suffer too. Food security weakens, disasters worsen, livelihoods disappear, and future generations inherit a more fragile planet.

This World Biodiversity Day, letโ€™s move beyond awareness and take action. ๐ŸŒฑ

๐ŸŒณ Protect forests and marine ecosystems
Support reforestation, mangrove protection, and marine conservation efforts that help preserve habitats for wildlife and strengthen climate resilience.

โ™ป๏ธ Reduce waste and plastic pollution
Choose reusable products, practice proper waste segregation, and reduce single-use plastics that pollute rivers, oceans, and natural habitats.

๐ŸŒป Support sustainable communities and local conservation efforts
Buy local, support sustainable farming and fisheries, and participate in community cleanups, tree planting, and environmental initiatives.

๐Ÿ“ข Speak up for environmental justice and stronger biodiversity protection
Raise awareness, support science-based policies, and hold governments and corporations accountable for activities that destroy ecosystems and exploit natural resources irresponsibly.

Every action matters. Every voice counts.

Join our growing environmental movement and volunteer with us to help protect biodiversity and our shared future. ๐ŸŒโœจ

The students of the School of Tourism from Philippine Women's University explored the beauty and importance of wetlands through a Wetlands Museum Visit and Nature Walk in Freedom Island at the Las Piรฑasโ€“Paraรฑaque Wetland Park.

The activity gave the students a chance to learn more about the rich biodiversity, coastal ecosystems, migratory birds, and marine life that thrive within the protected wetland area. Walking through the trails of Freedom Island also served as a meaningful reminder that wetlands play a vital role in protecting both nature and communities.

As future tourism professionals, may this experience inspire them to become advocates for sustainable tourism and environmental conservation promoting destinations while protecting the ecosystems that make them special. โœจ๐ŸŒฟ

For years now, Filipinos in Metro Manila are exhausted from their commute to and from work. Major roads filled with private vehicles result in traffic jams that can last for hours. Public transportation remains in dire need of support, as drivers cannot breakeven due to rising oil prices. ๐Ÿฅต๐Ÿš—

It is clear that Metro Manila is a concrete jungle built for cars. Sidewalks are obstacle courses even for able-bodied people, leaving behind our fellow persons with disabilties. Pedestrians navigate overpasses and underpasses, endlessly walking from terminal to terminal. ๐Ÿšท๐Ÿ›ฃ

These are the reasons why some choose to ride their bicycle to work. Aside from being a sustainable alternative with significant health benefits, cycling is a practical option for Filipino workers. It can also be a form of resistance to car-centric cities. ๐Ÿšดโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿƒ

The webinar became a meaningful platform to discuss the urgent need to protect the Irrawaddy Dolphin, conserve marine ecosystems, and strengthen community based environmental action in Western Visayas.

Participants, advocates, students and environmental defenders came together to raise awareness on the growing threats faced by marine biodiversity and coastal communities. The discussion also emphasized the importance of collective action, policy protection and sustainable conservation efforts.

Maraming salamat sa lahat ng nakiisa, sumuporta at patuloy na tumitindig para sa kalikasan at karagatan.

This 2026, community science lies at the heart of World Migratory Bird Day. The Philippines is part of the East Asianโ€“Australasian Flyway (EAAF), one of the major bird migration routes that can be found all around the world. ๐ŸŒ

Our country hosts internationally recognized wetlands that serve as transient habitats for hundreds of migratory birds. One such site is the Las Piรฑas-Paraรฑaque Wetland Park (LPPWP), a critical habitat found within Metro Manila for migratory birds and other coastal wildlife. ๐ŸŒŠ๐Ÿƒ

Various species of migratory birds are at risk due to habitat degradation and ecological destruction. LPPWP and other neighboring coastal ecosystems are vulnerable to human activity such as marine plastic pollution and land reclamation.

It is our responsibility to protect and preserve migratory birds through habitat conservation and volunteer work. Average citizens can help in monitoring migration routes and population changes, to support evidence-based environmental policies. ๐Ÿฆ
