The No. 1 enemy of safety is silence.

Helping Filipino seafarers become comfortable and confident to speak up with respect is essential to a strong safety culture.

It was another meaningful opportunity to facilitate soft-skills training with chaplains who visit cargo ships and sail on cruise ships.

Beyond providing pastoral care, they are encouraged to serve as neutral facilitators of people skills—helping officers and crew strengthen communication, trust, wellbeing, and operational safety.

Another way of ministering to global seafarers who quietly keep the world’s economy moving.

Leadership Training for Young Officers

Honored to facilitate the Leadership Training for the young officers of the Philippine Coast Guard – Maritime Safety Services Command (PCG MSSC), held on March 4, 2026, at Sangley Point Naval Base, Cavite.

The session covered the 6 Levels of Maritime Leadership and Values, highlighting that authority comes with rank, but true leadership is demonstrated through influence, integrity, and responsibility in protecting life at sea.

Grateful for the dedication of the men and women of the Philippine Coast Guard as they continue strengthening maritime safety and public service.

Safe and Sound at Sea: Total Wellness for Safer Operations
December 3, 2025 • Lanson Place, MOA

Honored that today’s session led the Greek principal to request a dedicated 2–3 hour training for their officers and crew in May 2026. Their confidence shows that when wellness is taken seriously, safety and excellence follow.

Grateful as well for the chance to speak at the CSC Manila, Inc. Officers and Crew Conference, where we emphasized how a seafarer’s total wellness—spiritual, mental, emotional, physical, social, occupational, and financial—shapes the way they lead, work, and stay safe at sea.

One Global Crew

No longer Asian or European — We Are One.

Onboard, we’re united by a shared mission.
We work side by side, communicating directly yet respectfully to keep harmony, drive results, and make a lasting impact.

Because at sea, labels don’t keep the ship moving—teamwork does.

💡 What Makes a Global Crew Strong?

They don’t see divisions.
They see one team.
They respect differences but focus on the shared goal.

Especially when:
• Cultures collide
• Language barriers slow things down
• Pressure is high and deadlines are close
• The unexpected changes the plan

That’s when unity matters most.

7 Habits of a Strong Global Crew

1. Speak Directly—But With Respect
Clarity keeps operations smooth. Respect keeps relationships strong.

🗣️ Try saying:
“Here’s what needs to be done—let’s make it happen together.”

2. Listen to Understand
Different cultures bring different ideas.
Don’t just hear—understand.

✅ Ask questions.
✅ Repeat key points to confirm.
✅ Value every voice.

3. Value Strength in Differences
Eastern discipline. Western initiative.
Combined, they create a powerful crew.

4. Adapt to Cultural Styles
Some prefer detailed instructions, others thrive with autonomy.
Adjust your approach to fit the person and the task.

5. Resolve Issues Quickly
Don’t let small misunderstandings turn into big problems.
Address them early, respectfully, and with a focus on solutions.

6. Share the Responsibility
A united crew trusts each other to take ownership.
When everyone owns their role, the whole ship runs better.

7. Keep the Mission Bigger Than Ourselves
It’s not about “us” and “them.”
It’s about we—sailing toward the same goal.

So, What’s the Secret?
• We speak with clarity.
• We act with respect.
• We value differences.
• We adapt when needed.
• We resolve conflict fast.
• We share the load.
• We unite in purpose.

Final Reminder
Onboard, we’re not Asians or Europeans—we’re one global crew.
Direct in words. Respectful in spirit. United in purpose.

📌 Tag a crewmate who unites the team.
📌 Share this to inspire harmony onboard.
📌 Remind others: Unity drives results.

⚓ Short Story: “The Engine Room Misunderstanding”

Chief Engineer Ramon had just finished a 12-hour shift on the MV Pacific Eagle. He was looking forward to some rest when the 2nd Engineer, Jun, knocked on his cabin door.

“Chief, we need to talk,” Jun said tensely. “There was an issue with the l**e oil filter change this morning. The Captain said it wasn’t logged properly, and he thinks we’re being careless.”

Ramon’s blood started to boil. Careless? After all the years he spent making sure the engine room was in top condition? He clenched his fists, ready to fire back.

But then he remembered what the vessel’s visiting chaplain shared during the last crew fellowship:

“Be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry.” (James 1:19)

He took a breath. “Tell me what happened, Jun.”

Jun explained that the junior oiler did the filter change under his supervision but forgot to write the entry. “It was my responsibility, Chief. I should’ve double-checked.”

Instead of snapping, Ramon nodded. “Thanks for being honest. We’ll update the log and inform the Captain together. And let’s review our checklist again.”

The conversation ended with understanding and teamwork—not blame.

Later that night, Ramon texted his wife from the satellite messenger:

“I almost lost my cool today. But that verse you always remind me of helped me pause. It saved the day.”

🧠 Reflection Questions:
1. How do I usually respond when a crewmate makes a mistake—do I listen first or react in anger?
2. What habits can I build to help me pause and think before I speak onboard?
3. How can I promote a culture of respectful communication and emotional safety among the crew?

Before your next shift or toolbox meeting, take a moment to reflect on James 1:19.
Make a personal commitment:
“Today, I will listen more, speak less, and respond with grace.”

Post this verse near your workstation, in your locker, or in the common area. Let it be a daily reminder that wise words and calm hearts make safer ships and stronger crews.
