The PGBI Story 2025: Silver Year Anniversary

A revised version of our PGBI Story: 2020, originally authored by Atty. Pedro Leslie 'FRMG PLS' B. Salva, was subsequently rewritten and updated by Engr. Melliardine 'GS MEL' G. Gamet.

Brothers and Sisters, let me tell you a story about the birth and journey of the Philippine GUARDIANS Brotherhood, Inc.—or PGBI—a story of brotherhood, perseverance, and unity that spans decades and continents.

Once upon a time, in the early 1980s, in the rugged lands of Mindanao, a small group of non-commissioned officers, led by a dedicated constable named Leborio “FGF Abraham” Jangao Jr., formed a humble squad. They called themselves the DIABLO SQUAD, a name born from their fierce commitment and the challenging environment they faced. At that time, their circle was limited to the military men in their area, and their organization remained informal—existing within the shadows, driven by noble intentions.

As the years passed, their purpose grew clearer and stronger. Despite resistance from higher military authorities, the DIABLO SQUAD persisted, slowly expanding its influence. On March 12, 1984, this group officially registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) as the DIABLO SQUAD (CB) BROTHERHOOD ASSOCIATION, INC., marking the beginning of a new chapter. Yet, they had no formal constitution or by-laws—only their shared brotherhood and resolve.

Meanwhile, another group emerged. In December 1984, the GUARDIANS BROTHERHOOD, INC. (GBI) also sought registration with the SEC. Though different in their origins, both organizations shared a common goal: to serve and protect the community and their fellow Filipinos. Interestingly, each group had entirely different sets of incorporators—fifteen from each—highlighting the fragmented beginnings of what would someday become a united force.

As the years went by, the GUARDIANS movement grew beyond military circles, reaching various sectors of society. By April 1986, a new organization called the GUARDIANS CENTER FOUNDATION, INC. (GCFI) was established, bringing together five of the original fifteen incorporators from the earlier groups. The challenge was clear: unification. Different factions, different visions, and different goals threatened to divide rather than unite.

Prominent leaders like Senator Gregorio B. Honasan II played a crucial role, tirelessly working to bring these factions together. Their efforts culminated in a historic meeting in March 2000, in Fort Bonifacio, in Metro Manila—a gathering of the major leaders of the GUARDIANS movement from across the country and even overseas. Delegates from thirteen regions, representing various groups, sat down to forge a path forward. It was a difficult, often tense process—years of rivalry and division needed to be overcome.

But out of this crucible of challenge and dialogue, a new organization was born—the Philippine GUARDIANS Brotherhood, Incorporated, or PGBI. On June 26, 2000, the SEC officially registered PGBI, marking a milestone in the movement’s history. Delegates from different regions crafted the organization’s Constitution and By-Laws, laying down the principles that would guide their collective mission: to serve GOD, Country, and Family.

From that day, PGBI’s influence spread far beyond the Philippines. The brotherhood expanded its reach to the Middle East, Europe, Southeast Asia and North America, with chapters formed by Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs). These overseas chapters became vital pillars, helping to strengthen and energize the organization back home.

Throughout its journey, PGBI was led by charismatic leaders. For over a decade, Senator Honasan served as the Grand Supremo (GS), inspiring many with his dedication. Later, leadership passed to other committed officers, each striving to uphold the organization’s mission and adapt to changing times. Challenges, disputes, and reforms marked the path, but the core values of brotherhood, service, and unity remained firm.

In 2013, a pivotal moment took place. At a convention in Tacloban City, the organization experienced a leadership transition, with Atty. Alvin Rex "GS ARAB" Bilagot assuming command, succeeding GS GR**GO—who was expelled by the National Executive Council through NEC Resolution No. 01-2013, Series 2013. This resolution was signed by fourteen (14) NEC members. GS GR**GO had led the organization from its conception to September 21, 2013. While GS ARAB’s leadership ushered in a new era, internal conflicts continued to challenge the organization.

A new chapter commenced on September 21, 2018, when Engr. Melliardine "GS MEL" G. Gamet assumed leadership following his unanimous victory in the national election held on June 2, 2018, during the 16th National Convention in Baler, Aurora Province. Rather than transferring leadership immediately upon his election, GS Arab requested to do so on September 20, 2018. However, when the time came for the handover, he ultimately refused to relinquish the leadership, resulting in no official transition taking place.

Furthermore, GS Arab has no support from the NEC, which reaffirmed the legality of GS MEL’s leadership through a formal resolution.

As the incumbent National President/Chairman, GS MEL has continued to steer PGBI with dedication and resolve, further strengthening the organization’s foundation and expanding its reach and impact. His leadership was reaffirmed when he was unanimously re-elected in July 2021 during the 18th National Convention held at La Carlota City, amid the challenges of the pandemic era.

One of the notable achievements of GS MEL’s administration is the rebranding of the PGBI logo, the straightening of processes, and the development of policies with clear visions for the organization’s future—only lacking the logistics to truly fly towards its mission, vision, and objectives.

Only this year, last June 21, 22 and 23, 2025, at the National Convention in Bacolod City, the organization was honored by the presence of three (3) distinguished Incorporators—Atty. Pedro Leslie "FRMG PLS" Salva, P/Col Steve "SGF SKIPPER" Martir, and Judge Arthur "FRMG COMET" Abudiente, represented by his proxy FRMG GWAPO—who graced the affair, affirming the legitimacy of GS MEL's leadership and support.

Since PGBI is a non-political organization, local politicians often come and go—using its chapters for personal interests and then vanishing without gratitude. But despite limited resources, PGBI stands resilient, going all the way along the path of brotherhood and service.

Today, after more than twenty-five (25) years, PGBI remains proud and resilient, a shining testament to the enduring spirit of brotherhood. Guided by its sacred Constitution—serving GOD, Country, and Family—it continues to forge bonds of loyalty and trust. Like a steadfast ship battered by storms yet unbowed, PGBI stands rooted in integrity and unwavering purpose, supporting communities and nurturing the flame of service that burns within its core.

The story of PGBI echoes the timeless words of the Bard: "What’s past is prologue," and from this prologue, a new chapter unfolds. Resilient, united, and resolute, it embodies the noble spirit that says, "We are such stuff as dreams are made on," a reflection of the Filipino soul—resilient amidst adversity, unwavering in hope, and steadfast in unity. For in brotherhood’s true essence, "All's well that ends well," and the journey continues, guided by purpose and the eternal light of service.

Let this be a call to all who bear the badge of brotherhood: "To thine own self be true." The true measure of our strength lies not in numbers or titles, but in the unwavering commitment to sustain the mission— to serve, protect, and uplift—the very heart of PGBI.

As we look ahead, let us heed the timeless truth: "Our doubts are traitors," and the only true victory is in fidelity to the ideals we cherish. The true guardians are those who uphold the law and the mission, standing firm against the tides of chaos, ensuring that the light of brotherhood shines ever brighter. For in this sacred oath, "What he hath he will keep," and what we uphold shall endure beyond the fleeting shadows—an everlasting testament to the spirit of PGBI. – GSM

The GUARDIANS Handshake: A Symbol of Unity and Respect

The GUARDIANS Handshake is a distinct and meaningful form of greeting and recognition practiced among members of the GUARDIANS Brotherhood, Incorporated. It's a subtle yet significant gesture that embodies unity, respect, and camaraderie within the organization. Performed correctly, the Guardians Handshake is a silent signal of belonging and mutual understanding.

The authentic GUARDIANS Handshake involves a standard, firm handshake, but with key, understated nuances:

Characteristics of the Proper GUARDIANS Handshake:

1. A Firm Grip: The handshake should be firm and confident, conveying sincerity and strength. It should not be overly forceful or aggressive.
2. Eye Contact: Maintain brief eye contact during the handshake to help convey sincerity and respect.
3. Subtle Pressure: Apply a slight, almost imperceptible pressure during the grip, specific to the Guardians' handshake. This unique pressure serves as a subtle identifier, known only to members.
4. Controlled Movement: The hand remains primarily in a vertical orientation. There should be minimal movement, with no noticeable wagging or upward lifting of the hands.
5. Brief Duration: The handshake is brief and to the point – long enough to convey acknowledgment and respect, but not prolonged to the point of being ostentatious.

This understated and dignified manner of handshaking reinforces the values of the Guardians Brotherhood, emphasizing respect, unity, and subtle recognition among members, without drawing undue attention. Importantly, it's executed without any exaggerated movements or gestures that could be misconstrued.

The Handshake with Higher-Ranking Officers:

When performed with higher-ranking officers within the organization, the Guardians Handshake maintains its core principles of respect and unity but is conducted in a dignified and professional manner. The handshake remains firm, with the characteristic slight, unique pressure, but should not imply subservience or the seeking of a blessing.

Instead, it serves as a gesture of mutual respect, acknowledging the officer's position and role within the organization while asserting one's own presence and commitment to the Brotherhood's values. This interaction is characterized by:

a. Equal Footing - The handshake is conducted as between equals, with both parties standing upright and maintaining direct eye contact. This reflects the organization's emphasis on camaraderie and the shared pursuit of its goals.
b. Respect, - Not Subservience: While deference to rank is acknowledged, the handshake does not involve any actions that could be misconstrued as pleading or seeking favor. The gesture is respectful yet assertive, underscoring the individual's pride in being part of the organization.
c. Camaraderie and Unity: - The handshake reinforces the bonds of brotherhood, emphasizing the shared values and objectives that unite members across different ranks. It is a moment of connection, reaffirming the organization's spirit of solidarity and cooperation.

In this context, the GUARDIANS Handshake with higher-ranking officers is a nuanced blend of respect, equality, and brotherhood, reflecting the complex dynamics within the organization. It is a symbol of the organization's unique culture, where hierarchy is acknowledged but does not overshadow the fundamental principles of unity and mutual respect.
