During the mid-60s, as efforts to seek different avenues for income began to proliferate as farming cannot anymore fill their empty rice bowls, some housewives explored the industry of traditional embroidery in Bagong Barrio. They started with blouses, pillow cases, table cloth and dresses, and later on tried making kimono and barong tagalog, which unbeknownst to them will flourish several decades since.
In 1996, former President Ramos ordered all government employees to wear Barong Tagalog and filipiniana dress/kimona as part of the Philippine Centennial celebration. This started the industryโs expansion in Pandi, followed by a great milestone in the early 2000, when the townโs barong at saya bagged the National โOne Town, One Productโ Award.
With the primary goal of helping potential designers to start a business and purchase quality yet budget-friendly raw materials, the Bagong Barrio Multi-Purpose Cooperative (BBMPC) was launched on September 8, 2002. Through the initiative of Mr. Santiago Antonio as the Founding Officer, the establishment of BBMPC was spearheaded by only 30 members, shelling out an initial shared capital of Php 1,050,000.00. Mr. Prudentio Jacinto was elected as the first Chairman.
The cooperative was first registered on September 16, 2002 in the Cooperative Development Authority (CDA) under the number PGA-4510. On November 10, 2009, through the Republic Act 9520 (Philippine Cooperative Code of 2008), it was re-registered in the CDA and acquired its new number 9520-03002036.
Since then, the BBMPC, now known with its trade name Disenyo Pandi, has been a viable partner in delivering quality gowns and barongs across borders especially with the presence of its own Wedding Depot. The coopโs continuous growth to ensure better future for families with its enticing line-up of products and services exemplifies its unwavering commitment to provide hope and fulfill dreams of its members through and through.
