Today, we talked about three different moments in the life of Mary, Martha, Lazarus, and Jesus—and three important responses we need to learn as followers of Christ.
Story 1 — LISTEN | Luke 10:38–42
Jesus visited the home of Martha and Mary.
Martha was busy preparing and serving, while Mary chose to sit at Jesus’ feet and listen to Him. Martha became frustrated because she felt that she was doing all the work, but Jesus reminded her that she was worried about many things while only one thing was truly necessary.
Mary had chosen what was better.
Sometimes, we can become so busy doing things for Jesus that we forget to simply spend time with Jesus.
Before we move, serve, decide, or react—listen first.
Sit at His feet.
Hear His Word.
Know His heart.
Story 2 — LET JESUS WORK AND OBSERVE | John 11:17–44
Later, Mary and Martha faced something much heavier.
Their brother Lazarus died.
When Jesus arrived in Bethany, Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days. Mary and Martha were grieving, and from their perspective, Jesus had arrived too late.
But Jesus was about to show them something greater.
He asked them to roll away the stone, prayed to the Father, and then called Lazarus out of the tomb.
The man who had been dead walked out alive.
There are moments when we have already done everything we know how to do. We have prayed, waited, cried, and wondered why God has not moved according to our timing.
Sometimes, our role is simply to trust, obey what Jesus asks us to do, and then watch Him work.
Mary and Martha could not raise Lazarus from the dead.
That was something only Jesus could do.
Learn when to listen.
Learn when to obey.
And learn when to step back and watch Jesus do what only Jesus can do.
Story 3 — LAY DOWN YOUR LIFE | John 12:1–8
Then six days before the Passover, Jesus returned to Bethany.
Martha was serving again.
Lazarus was sitting at the table with Jesus.
And Mary did something extraordinary.
She took an expensive perfume, poured it on Jesus’ feet, and wiped His feet with her hair.
The fragrance filled the entire house.
To others, especially Judas, it looked wasteful.
But Jesus saw something deeper.
Mary was giving Him something costly, personal, and precious.
She was not asking, “What is the least I can give?”
She poured it out.
And that is what surrender looks like.
There comes a point in our walk with Jesus when listening is no longer enough.
Watching Him work is no longer enough.
We respond.
We surrender.
We lay down our lives before Him.
Sometimes worship will cost us our time, comfort, plans, resources, reputation, and even the things we treasure most.
But when we truly know who Jesus is, surrender no longer feels like waste.
So LightLife, this is our journey:
Listen to Jesus.
Sit at His feet before you become too busy for His voice.
Let Jesus work and observe.
Trust Him when you have reached the end of what you can do.
Lay down your life.
When you have seen who He is and what He can do, respond by giving Him everything.
Listen.
Trust.
Surrender.
And let your life become a response to Jesus.
