A Sacred Festival at Risk: Why Ahunan Power Has No Place in Turumba
The Turumba Festival of Pakil is a vital religious and cultural celebration that reflects the community’s faith, history, and identity. In this light, the decision of the Pakil LGU to accept Ahunan Power Inc as a sponsor is deeply concerning, given the company’s projects that pose risks to the environment.
We strongly oppose this decision. The Turumba Festival is not merely a festivity, but a sacred tradition that must be protected. It is inappropriate to associate it with a company whose projects run counter to the community’s values of environmental stewardship and collective well-being.
The irony is clear: a company linked to environmentally harmful projects is supporting a celebration rooted in respect for nature. This raises serious concerns about prioritizing financial interests over public welfare and undermines the ethical responsibility of the local government.
Moreover, the Ahunan Power Dam project threatens ecosystems and local livelihoods. Instead of safeguarding natural resources, such decisions create space for potentially destructive developments.
This also erodes public trust. The government is expected to represent the people’s interests with transparency, accountability, and responsiveness to community voices.
We therefore call on the Pakil LGU to reconsider and revoke its partnership with Ahunan Power Inc, to listen to its constituents, and to uphold the integrity of the Turumba Festival. We also urge the community to remain vigilant in defending its culture, environment, and faith.
Ultimately, a celebration of faith should not be supported by actions that contradict its very essence.
SAVE PAKIL!
