๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ After almost a year since a massive fire swallowed the public market of Oton, Iloilo, local artists under Ogtonganon Visual Artists League Inc. (OVAL) started up a fundraising event through an art exhibit dubbed โ€œArtiendaโ€ at the โ€œground zeroโ€ of the fire incident on Thursday, Dec 1, 2022.
According to OVAL, the exhibition intends to convey, communicate, and bring the arts closer to the people, as well as to divide 40 percent of the profits with the impacted market sellers or perhaps restore the open market.
As it allows people to appreciate art in its most basic form "in order to develop and direct, simple casual communication with the spectators," the exhibit was also inspired by the real-life "tyendahan" scene.
A total of sixteen OVAL artists took part in the exhibition, which featured their one-of-a-kind works of art illustrating various market scenes and everyday people's lives.
This simple move proves the love of the ogtonganons to their town, oton. That they're willing to do anything to help their town rise again. โ™ฅ๏ธโ™ฅ๏ธโ™ฅ๏ธ

๐Ÿ‰ Watermelon, watermelon~

Oton has earned a reputation as Iloilo's "Watermelon Capital" and "Sandiya Capital of the Visayas" due to its outstanding production of the sweetest watermelon in the region. The annual sandiya festival is a celebration of harvest and presents an ideal opportunity to savor the very best watermelon. This celebration includes an arts and crafts show, food vendors, fruit contests, displays of agricultural and horticultural produce, and sales of local handicrafts and products from different barangays. In addition, this festival is held every first week of December in the city of Oton. December is the peak season, and during this time of the year, thirst-quenching, full-flavored, nutritious watermelons abound in the area. But due to the pandemic, the celebration of this festival stopped. ๐Ÿฅณ

Do you know Nang Palang's Buko Pie? ๐Ÿคญ

Nang Palang's Buko Pie, one of the best buko pies in Iloilo, is located in Barangay Trapiche, Oton.
This is Otonโ€™s well-known delicacy and pasalubong. Since the business started in 1972, it has grown to become a favorite pasalubong destination for buses plying the Antique-Iloilo route. Nang Palangโ€™s has, in fact, become synonymous with Oton. While the best seller is buko pie, Nang Palangโ€™s also sells pineapple pie, cassava cake, bibingka, chicken pie, and others.

Do you have any idea about this plant to which we are referring? ๐Ÿชด

Long time ago, there's a thriving plant growing at the very shores of the river that surrounds the entire town of Oton. This plant looks like the vines or roots which are crawling at the shores of the river and when this vine is axed, its releases resin or sap which has the color of blood. They call this plant "batang" however it was not mentioned by Father Demetrio Cobos in his book "Apuntos Historicos" and only said that the name of Oton came from this plant. ๐Ÿ˜ฎ๐Ÿชด

Want to know about the origin of our town's name? Here are the first 2 post about it:

Last time, we told you about the most popular and usually told origin of our town's name by elders. If you haven't seen it, here's the link:๐Ÿ˜‰ https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=114645008163928&id=100088552870497&mibextid=Nif5oz

But did you know that there are three origins? Here's the second one...

Do you know what kogtong is?
Some of the natives are saying that during those times, the fishermen always have a plenty catch of the fish known as "kogtong" - which are plenty in the area. Kogtong is a type of fish that is six inches long, grayish in color, and can be caught only in the river. They call the place Ogtong taken from the name of the fish, Kogtong. ๐ŸŸ๐ŸŸ๐ŸŸ

๐Ÿง Did you know?

The Batiano River was a trading site during the Chinese and Spanish era.
Some old residents of Oton, already in their twilight years, would share stories about how during their youth they would frequent the river for a swim and fish. People living along the riverbank enjoyed riding in their bancas drifting away to the sea and back, from dusk till dawn.
Batiano River then was also a source of marine life and very rich in vegetation. Residents never experienced the pangs of hunger. All these are now part of the past. ๐Ÿ˜ฎ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

Have you attended the Katagman Festival before? ๐Ÿง

If not, you should. Why? Because this festival has a very interesting cultural theme that celebrates the ancient Ilonggo culture. ๐Ÿ’ƒ

The Katagman Festival is the yearly cultural festival and the founding anniversary of the town of Oton in the province of Iloilo, Philippines, every May 3. Representatives from all the participating barangays take part in the celebration, which lasts for a full week.

In the Katagman Festival, participants dance to the rhythm of traditional instruments covered with golden eye and nose pieces, or death-masks, a reproduction of the golden mask discovered in Oton in 1973. ๐ŸŽญ

The Katagman Festival was launched in 2003. It originates from the word "Katagman," which served as Barangay San Antonio's original name before the arrival of the Spaniards. The beginning of civilization in this region of the country can be found in Barangay San Antonio. The Katagman Festival features Laro ng Lahi, which revives traditional games like Palosebo, Tumba Patis, Kadang sa Paya, and many more. The Tribe Contestโ€”a distinctive fusion of street dancing and street theaterโ€”is one of the festival's highlights. Tribu Kanipaan, Tribu Nakatundan, Tribu Katamnan, Tribu Parayan, Tribu Paraw, Tribu Mandaragat, and Tribu Malaca are the tribes that are represented by the 37 barangays. ๐Ÿ˜ฒ๐Ÿ˜ฒ๐Ÿ˜ฒ

The festival aims to acknowledge the rich history of the gold death mask in the community, which has been fading in the past few years. The Katagman Festival's official symbol is a gold mask, which symbolizes Oton's extensive historical and cultural legacy. ๐Ÿฅฐ

Did you know? ๐Ÿง

The Oton Saga Mural Sculpture is a mural relief sculpture that depicts the historical events of the town, starting with the arrival of the datus during World War II, and is located on the right side of the oval-shaped basketball court on the plaza of Oton, Iloilo. The mural was sculpted by a distinguished Ilonggo National Artist named Timoteo J. Jumayo.

GOLDEN COMEBACK ๐Ÿ‘‘

Oton Gold Death Mask is Back?! Sanaol gabalik...

Half a century after its discovery, the Oton Gold Death Mask will be brought home. On January 20, 2023, the National Museum of the Philippines unveiled this National Cultural Treasure in the exhibit, "Ang Tamung nga Bulawan" (The Oton Gold Death Mask), at Gallery 2 of the National Museum Western Visayas in Iloilo City.

The return of the Oton Gold Death Mask is timely as Western Visayas celebrates this January a facet of its heritage as seen in the celebration of Ati-Atihan of Kalibo and Dinagyang of Iloilo.
