In 2025, over 20 metric tons of recyclables were collected and recycled instead of being thrown away as trash, helping reduce around 60,000 kg of carbon emissions, conserve energy, protect marine life, and preserve our natural resources. Each bottle, paper, and piece of plastic carries a story of compassion and shared responsibility, proving that small, mindful actions can create a ripple of change. On April 11, 2026, a vegetarian cooking class was held at the Tzu Chi Ormoc Humanistic Activity Hall as part of the Earth Day celebration. The activity gathered local volunteers and invited guests to promote environmental protection, healthier living, and compassion through simple but meaningful food choices. Participants learned how preparing and eating plant-based meals can help reduce carbon emissions, support better health, and contribute to addressing climate change.

More than just a cooking activity, the event became a shared learning experience where participants discovered the value of sustainability in everyday life. Through hands-on preparation of vegetarian dishes, they realized that small lifestyle changes can make a big impact on the environment and personal well-being. What was once a quiet Sunday morning turned into a meaningful act of service as 18 youth members, 17 scholars, 7 Happy Volunteers, and 4 Gray Volunteers led by the Tzu Chi Foundation Youth of Ormoc conducted a clean-up drive at the Tzu Chi Great Love Village in Barangay Lilo-an on March 29, 2026. Guided by the principle of “Cleanliness at the Source,” the activity aimed to promote environmental awareness, discipline, and community responsibility through collective action. Residents expressed deep gratitude as they witnessed the youth choosing service over rest, highlighting the positive impact of youth involvement in community care.

The initiative is strongly aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), particularly SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities and SDG 13: Climate Action, as it promotes proper waste management, environmental protection, and community participation. Through hands-on experience, the youth gained deeper understanding of environmental responsibility while contributing to a cleaner and safer community. 𝐃𝐀𝐀𝐈 𝐍𝐄𝐖𝐒: In Ormoc, a young university student named Gelyn Papiona carries a dream shaped by hardship and hope. Raised in a family sustained through scrap picking, she witnessed her mother endure long days in the landfill, collecting recyclables under the scorching sun to support their daily needs. After the passing of her father, the weight of responsibility fell entirely on her mother, making Gelyn uncertain if she could continue her studies. Yet through the Tzu Chi Foundation scholarship, hope found its way back into her life.

With her mother’s sacrifices as her inspiration, Gelyn presses forward, excelling in her studies and holding on to a simple but powerful dream: to graduate and lift her family out of poverty. She believes that education is her way forward, not only to change her life, but to honor her parents’ struggles. For Gelyn, every lesson learned is a step closer to the day she can proudly walk the stage with her parents by her side, proving that even from the hardest beginnings, hope can rise and transform lives.

ORMOC CITY — Seventeen-year-old scholar Niño Mayang proves that determination can rise above hardship as he balances school and labor to support his family. A Grade 11 honor student at Liloan National High School, Niño spends his free time working under the sun, clearing farmland and carrying heavy loads, while staying committed to his studies.

Coming from a struggling farming family, his experiences have fueled his ambition to succeed. Through the support of the Tzu Chi Educational Assistance Program, Niño continues his education with renewed hope while developing discipline, respect, and perseverance.

Admired by teachers and peers for his dedication and kindness, Niño dreams of finishing his studies and building a better home for his family. Guided by resilience and gratitude, he continues to strive forward, proving that even under life’s harshest conditions, dreams can grow stronger.

【Bodhisattvas in Action】Young and Compassionate

Way back 2017, during Tropical Storm Urduja, while many were struggling to recover, these young hearts chose to rise, not just for themselves, but for others.

Despite being affected by the storm, the Ormoc Tzu Chi Youth gently cleaned the homes of their elderly neighbors at Brgy. Lilo-an, Tzu Chi Great Love Village, offering not just help, but hope.

In their small hands were acts of kindness. In their quiet service was a powerful message: compassion knows no age.

Years have passed, yet their spirit remains the same, steadfast, selfless, and full of love.

From then until now, they continue to remind us that even the simplest act, when done with sincerity, can change lives. 💙🤍💜

𝐃𝐀𝐀𝐈 𝐍𝐄𝐖𝐒: “Save the planet” is no longer just a slogan—it has become a living movement in Ormoc City, Leyte, where corporations and communities come together to turn waste into hope.

At the heart of this initiative are partners like ERT-CDE Holdings Inc., including GGC Premix Commissary in Ormoc and their Kananga facility, who actively support environmental protection efforts by donating recyclable materials such as cardboard, plastic bottles, and cans. Their partnership with the Tzu Chi Foundation Ormoc began after their environmental team visited the recycling area and witnessed how waste materials are transformed into support for humanitarian programs.

For Environmental Management Head Francis Gonzales, this effort reflects a deeper purpose—ensuring that recyclables are not wasted, but used for meaningful causes that create real impact in the community.

Beyond institutions, this movement is strengthened by local leaders like Barangay Captain Rosalina A. Salazar of Barangay Bantigue, Ormoc City. She encourages residents to collect recyclables instead of throwing them away, turning simple daily actions into acts of giving. As both a supporter of environmental recycling efforts and a Tzu Chi coin can donor, she shows that even the smallest contributions can help others.
