๐ƒ๐€๐€๐ˆ ๐๐„๐–๐’: For many children, sitting in a dental chair can bring fear and anxiety, but during Tzu Chi Ormocโ€™s two-day medical-dental mission at Ormoc City Central School, nervous faces gradually turned into smiles. Through months of coordination with schools, teachers, parents, and volunteers, 1,668 elementary students received free dental services, helping ease tooth pain while encouraging proper oral hygiene and preventive care.

Tzu Chi volunteer dentist Dr. Alexander Copengco shared, โ€œServing the children was truly fulfilling. Seeing the people I was able to help made all the effort worthwhile.โ€ For brothers Denzel and Emmanuel Orolfo, the experience brought relief from the tooth pain they had endured. โ€œThank you so much, doctors, for the free tooth extraction. Our teeth will no longer hurt,โ€ they said.

Through the compassion of volunteer dentists, Tzu Chi volunteers, schools, families, and community partners, the mission brought more than dental careโ€”it gave children the courage to face their fears and the joy of smiling without pain.

Tzu Chiโ€™s Medical and Dental Mission in Ormoc City, held on 18 and 19 July 2026, provided medical and dental care to more than 2,000 patients.

Behind the mission were volunteers who traveled across land and sea, prepared equipment and transformed classrooms and open spaces at Ormoc City Central School into temporary treatment areas.

Volunteers, medical professionals, Tzu Chi Youth and scholars worked together throughout the two-day mission to assist patients and support the doctors.

As Dr. Proseso Rodavan put it: โ€œWhen a patient sincerely says, โ€˜Thank you very much, Doctor,โ€™ all the exhaustion disappears.โ€

๐ƒ๐€๐€๐ˆ ๐๐„๐–๐’: The success of Tzu Chiโ€™s Medical and Dental Mission in Ormoc City, held on July 18โ€“19, 2026, began long before the first patient entered the temporary clinic. Volunteers traveled across land and sea, bringing essential dental equipment from Bohol to Leyte and working through unexpected challenges along the way. Upon reaching Ormoc City Central School, they transformed classrooms and open spaces into treatment areas, checked equipment, arranged supplies, and prepared each station for more than 2,000 patients.

For logistics volunteer Jomar Bermoy, every detail mattered. โ€œSome machine parts need to be fully compatible, so we carefully inspect, adjust, and troubleshoot them,โ€ he shared, reflecting the patience and effort required behind the scenes.

Throughout the two-day mission, volunteers, medical professionals, Tzu Chi Youth, and scholars worked side by side, carrying equipment, assisting patients, supporting the doctors, and keeping the mission organized.

Despite the long hours, Dr. Proseso Rodavan found meaning in every moment of service: โ€œWhen a patient sincerely says, โ€˜Thank you very much, Doctor,โ€™ all the exhaustion disappears.โ€ Their stories show that behind every patient who receives care are people who give their time, strength, and expertiseโ€”quietly turning hard work into compassion and bringing hope to thousands of people in need.

Every graduation marks the beginning of a new chapter. This year, 37 Tzu Chi Ormoc Scholars, including graduates from college, university, and diploma programs, celebrate not only the completion of their studies but also a journey shaped by compassion, resilience, and service.

Behind every diploma is a story of sacrifice, perseverance, and hope. Each scholar walked a different path, yet they shared one common blessingโ€”the unwavering support of their families, benefactors, volunteers, and the Tzu Chi Educational Assistance Program. More than financial assistance, they received encouragement, guidance, and values that will remain with them long after graduation.

Throughout their years as scholars, they participated in Humanity Classes, volunteer activities, environmental programs, youth camps, and community service. These experiences taught them that education is not only about earning a degree but also about becoming a person who serves others with sincerity, gratitude, respect, and love.

Among this year's graduates is ๐—๐—ฎ๐˜†๐—ฐ๐—ฒ๐—น ๐—”. ๐—ฆ๐˜‚๐—ฐ๐—ผ, who graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Elementary Education. Reflecting on her journey, she shared:

๐ƒ๐€๐€๐ˆ ๐๐„๐–๐’: On the 18th and 19th of this month, Tzu Chi held a large-scale free medical mission in Ormoc City, Philippines, serving over a thousand residents. On the first day, a female patient arrived with a lipoma that caused severe pain when walking or sleeping. Fearing she might lose her job due to the condition, she was examined by mission doctors and underwent a successful removal procedure in a makeshift operating room, allowing her to finally regain a life of pain-free freedom.

When Tzu Chi volunteer surgeons Dr. Robert Sy, Dr. Timoteo Yu, and Dr. Anthony Lim arrived in Ormoc City for a two-day medical mission on July 18 and 19, they were immediately confronted by a harsh reality: a staggering number of low-income patients suffering from large, advanced cysts and tumors.

In the Philippines, the high cost of timely medical care remains a formidable barrier to healthcare, forcing many low-income families to endure untreated conditions for years.

Among those seeking help during the mission was 39-year-old Haide Ponso. Uncovering her clothing revealed an eyesore of a tumor bulging on her hipโ€”larger than the head of a newborn baby.

When asked if she had ever seen a doctor before, Haide broke down in tears.

โ€œI really haven't been able to get a medical check-up because we don't have the financial means. My husband works as a construction worker and suffers from severe arthritis too,โ€ Haide tearfully shared. Her worried husband, Ramon Ponso, who was standing nearby, comforted her.

For Haideโ€™s family, putting food on the table came firstโ€”leaving medical care on the back burner.

Haide worked as a housekeeper, but the growing lipoma made daily life agonizing. Climbing the stairs of her employerโ€™s three-story home was increasingly painful, as did walking long distances.

"It hurts so much," she confessed. "Even when I sleep, I can't turn on the other side. I have to stay completely still all night."

Despite the physical toll, financial hardship meant she couldn't afford to take time off. In fact, just a day before her July 18 surgery, Haide still reported for work.

Her employer was shocked, asking, "Why are you here? You should be resting for your surgery!"

Haide wept as she confessed her deepest fear: "I was afraid it might be cancer. I worried this might be my last day working in your home."

Many neighbors in her community had previously warned Haide that her large cyst could be cancerous. Yet, despite being weighed down by poverty, failing health, and anxiety, Haide refused to lose hope.

On the first day of the medical mission, she bravely arrived at Ormoc City Central School, accompanied by her husband.

Tzu Chi volunteer surgeons evaluated Haideโ€™s case and agreed to operate right away. Given that it was a makeshift operating room set up in a school, there were no surgical lights. Wearing headlamp, Dr. Timoteo Yu carefully made incisions and worked from multiple angles to free the growth, but the lipoma proved surprisingly stubborn.

After giving it all, Dr. Timoteo Yu prevailed. The excised tissue was larger than the surgical scissorsโ€”measuring well over 20 centimeters in diameter. Having finally shed that heavy weight, Haide let out a deep sigh of relief.

Following the surgery, Dr. Yu called Haideโ€™s husbandโ€”Ramonโ€”into the recovery area. The moment he saw Haide awake; he embraced her. Reunited at last, the heavy fear they had carried for years completely vanished. Free from a lifetime of physical and emotional burden, the couple couldn't hide their overwhelming happiness.

Ramon tearfully said, "I am so deeply grateful that my wife's lump was finally removed. It was truly a blessing to bring her here! Thank you so much, Tzu Chi! Thank you, Dr. Yu!"

Seeing the coupleโ€™s radiant smiles, the surrounding Tzu Chi volunteers and doctors erupted in joy and applause.

Meanwhile, Tzu Chi Medical Foundation CEO Alfredo Li jokingly said, โ€œYou will probably miss your cyst!"

Everyone laughed!

Before leaving, Haide happily waved to the other patients waiting outside, who cheered and congratulated her on her successful surgery.

Haide went home with joy, knowing that her ten-year ordeal of fear and pain had finally come to an end.

Throughout the two-day free minor surgery mission, Tzu Chi volunteer surgeons led by Buddhist Tzu Chi Medical Foundation President Dr. Robert Sy, alongside Dr. Timoteo Yu and Dr. Anthony Lim successfully operated 85 beneficiaries suffering from benign cyst and warts. Following their procedures, patients were also provided with necessary post-surgery medications.

For everyone who received care, Tzu Chi will forever be a part of their livesโ€”a memory of compassion that freed them from years of burden.

Long before the first consultation began, countless volunteers had already been hard at work preparing every corner of Ormoc City Central School for the Tzu Chi Foundation Ormoc Free Medical and Dental Mission held on July 18โ€“19. While beneficiaries witnessed the medical and dental services during the two-day mission, the days leading up to it were filled with careful planning, coordination, and teamwork to ensure that every patient was welcomed into a safe, organized, and compassionate environment.

Volunteer doctors, dentists, healthcare professionals, commissioners, Jianxi, youth volunteers, scholars, staff, and partner institutions worked side by side to transform classrooms into treatment areas, organize medical supplies, prepare equipment, assign volunteers, and coordinate logistics for a humanitarian mission that eventually served 2,551 beneficiaries.

One of the most significant preparations came from the Tzu Chi Bohol Dental Team, whose unwavering support made the dental mission possible. Travelling for approximately 13 hours, the team transported essential dental equipment, instruments, and supplies all the way from Bohol to Ormoc, ensuring that everything needed for the free dental services was ready before the first patient arrived.

Joining them were Tzu Chi youth scholars from Bohol, many of whom participated in their first dental mission outside their home province. Beyond assisting in setting up the venue, the experience also provided them with an opportunity to learn directly from volunteer doctors and dentists while serving the community.

"This is our first dental mission outside Bohol, so being part of it is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for many of us. We traveled for about 13 hours and encountered different challenges before arriving here, but every moment has been worthwhile. The warm welcome from the Tzu Chi Ormoc family reminded us that, no matter where we come from, we are one family united by the same mission of serving others," shared Joshua Barbacina, a fourth-year Bachelor of Science in Information Technology student from Bohol Island State Universityโ€“Balilihan and a Tzu Chi youth scholar.

For the Bohol team, the long journey was more than simply bringing equipment across the sea. It reflected their commitment to stand alongside Tzu Chi Ormoc in ensuring that thousands of children and patients received quality healthcare services during the two-day humanitarian mission.

Jennifer Caparoso, assistant coordinator of the medical mission, emphasized that preparations for an activity of this scale required careful planning and the dedication of every volunteer behind the scenes.

"Preparing for this mission requires everyone's dedication. Behind every service are people who have been giving their time and effort to make sure everything is ready. There may be challenges along the way, but we continue working together because our goal is to bring help and quality healthcare to those who need it most. Every effort becomes meaningful when it is done with compassion and for the benefit of others," Caparoso shared.

Before the beneficiaries arrived, the spirit of service was already evident throughout the venue. Every organized supply, every assembled piece of equipment, every classroom transformed into a treatment area, and every volunteer fulfilling their role reflected the collective compassion of people working together for one purpose.

Before the first patient was called and before the first treatment began, the mission had already started through the countless hearts and hands preparing to serve others with sincerity, dignity, and love.
