American Legion Post 4 Olongapo, PI

American Legion Post 4 Olongapo, PI Admiral Arthur F Spring Post 4 and American Legion Auxiliary Unit 4

Post 4 meetings, second Sunday at 1300.

On February 5, 1951, a group of dedicated men from the Philippine Department headed by Dept. Commander Gaily Underwood, agreed with the local U.S. military authorities that an American Legion Post would be a great asset to the Olongapo community and also serve as a “home away from home” for visiting servicemen. Don Russell, a WWII Navy Veteran, gathered 15 men necessary to organize a Post, dre

w up a constitution, held an: election for Post Officers, and shortly thereafter, Subic Bay Post No. 4 was “born” with Don as the first Post Commander. The Post was issued a permanent Charter on September 14, 1953. After several temporary locations, the current Post Home is located outside the SBMA (former Naval Base), at 21 Magsaysay Drive, a 5 minute walk. In 1961, the Post was dedicated as a permanent living memorial to Admiral Arthur P. Spring, a former Base Commander (1959 – 1960), who was made a life member a few months before his tragic death on November 14, 1960, in a plane crash over the Mariveles Mountains in Bataan. Admiral Spring was widely recognized for his numerous humanitarian goodwill programs in the Olongapo area. In front of the Post Home stands a monument a top which is a 3 – inch gun recovered in October 1952, from the Japanese POW ship Oryoku Maru which was sunk in Subic Bay December 15, 1944. The monument was dedicated on November 11, 1952, to the 1500 American Servicemen who perished during that attack. In 1983, the monument was given a “face-lift” and was rededicated in December 1983, with several survivors and family members of several o those who had perished on board the Mau present at the ceremony. Over the years, several Maru survivors and scores of the Veterans have visited the Post Home and monuments.
