WHAT IS PSYCHOLOGICAL TORTURE?

We're in the middle of a long-running book project. It's a worldwide-applicable, introductory medical textbook aimed at healthcare professionals who are non-experts in the field of torture and ill-treatment medicine. Of all the chapters to come off the production line to date, we're most pleased with and proud of this latest one published today. Psychological torture is such an important subject. It gets far less coverage than physical torture. And sadly we get to see it done all over the world.

We're especially grateful to series editor Dr Rachael Pickering's co-author Dr Alex Hong MRCP who was a medical student at the University of Leeds when he wrote the first draft, and to Rachael's fellow medical expert Dr Richard Kirk for his invaluable peer review of a later draft.

Psychological torture (PT) involves deliberately causing mental or emotional pain without direct physical harm. Other terms for it include clean torture, non-contact or no-touch torture, torture-light or torture-lite, and white torture.

Window of opportunity

As Integritas Healthcare moves into the final phase of our 2023-2026 strategic plan, one of our objectives is to achieve a 100% increase on our 2023 web hits.

Most other areas of our plan have been going well. But it you consider web hits from within countries with excellent human rights records and exemplary offender healthcare systems, then we are far away from achieving this particular target.

Interestingly though, if you consider just the countries that lie within the area known by some as the 10/40 Window, then we’ve already smashed it…
