𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐓𝐚𝐤𝐨𝐬 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭
𝐴𝑛𝑐𝑒𝑠𝑡𝑟𝑎𝑙 𝑆𝑜𝑖𝑙 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑆𝑎𝑙𝑒

This Mindanao Art 2023, I will be selling Ancestral Domain!

But only in small containers, okkoyoy. It is illegal to sell indigenous land.

I will be selling soil from ancestral domain, 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐮𝐩𝐜𝐲𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐬𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐬.

The soil will be sold by small amounts ('tinakos' in the Settler languages) and will also be set up as an art installation ('id takos' in Monuvu) during the fair.

Buyers will get a CADT (Certificate of Ancestral Domain Tinakos), signed by the Head Claimant to the ancestral domain!

For the first iteration of the project, the soil to be sold is Livuta to Buwis Tanong - soil from the ancestral domain of the 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐨𝐛𝐨 𝐀𝐩𝐚𝐨 𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐀𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐃𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐌𝐭 𝐀𝐩𝐨 (MADADMA) in Kidapawan, one of the oldest Monuvu ancestral domain claims.

In this case, it becomes 𝐕𝐢𝐬𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐊𝐨𝐝-𝐨𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐮, transmission of the tribe's oral history using art.

The soil that will be sold ('ponamuk,' the historical practice of acquiring goods through negotiation) 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐧 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐝𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐈𝐥𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐬, 𝐊𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐩𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐧 of the descendants of Apao, the semi-legendary figure said to be the first man to climb Mt Apo.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐨𝐢𝐥 𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐰𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐚 𝐏𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐚𝐬, and was formally turned over to me by the tribe for selling.

No less than the Head Claimant himself, Datu Damaso Bayawan, officiated the ritual, and he will be signing the certificates.

It will be contained in Sardine Cans, a conscious remembering of the historical practice by Settlers of bartering land with sardine cans from the Monuvu. While it was a form of indigenous land ownership recognition, it also played a role in displacing the Monuvu from their ancestral domain.

The cans are also upcycled, a nod to the ancient Monuvu tradition of upcycling.

𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐛𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐲 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐮𝐯𝐮 𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐭 𝐃𝐚𝐭𝐮 𝐙𝐡𝐞𝐣𝐢𝐞 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐛𝐨𝐠, who comes from the lineage of Apao. He will be painting them in the pastel colours distinct to the historical Inavoo textile of the Kidapawan Monuvu.

The sales of the art pieces will be divided between MADADMA and Datu Zhejie, which means 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐠𝐨 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐛𝐞.

Kidapawan's first commercial art gallery is now accepting paintings, sculptures, and other works of art for display.

✴️ 𝐀𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐲 𝐦𝐚𝐲 𝐬𝐮𝐛𝐦𝐢𝐭! The gallery is open to submissions from all artists. We welcome artworks from anywhere in Mindanao, the Philippines, Southeast Asia, and other parts of the world.

✴️ 𝐎𝐮𝐫 𝐂𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐛𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐬𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮! The gallery will be curated by City Historian Karlo Antonio Galay David, who will assist artists in conceptualizing artworks to make them resonate with Kidapawan

✴️ 𝐒𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐀𝐫𝐭𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐛𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐲𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜! The Masbad Gallery is housed in the Madriguera Building, a commercial building located along the Davao-Cotabato National Highway. The central location and commercial nature of the building promises a large foot traffic for potential buyers of artworks to be selected for display.

✴️ 𝐀𝐫𝐭𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐬𝐢𝐳𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐦𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐮𝐦 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐰𝐞𝐥𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞! The Madriguera Building has wall spaces and corners that can accommodate artworks of varying sizes and shapes.

✴️ 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐛𝐞 𝐚𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬! For a minimal share of sales, the gallery will be actively promoting and selling selected artworks to potential collectors. Artists will enter into contractual agreements with the gallery.

𝗞𝗶𝗱𝗮𝗽𝗮𝘄𝗮𝗻 𝗖𝘂𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳 Kidapawan Contemporary!

Artists and art fan in Davao got to taste 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐮𝐯𝐮 𝐊𝐮𝐬𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐮𝐬, 𝐓𝐨𝐯𝐨𝐤𝐚𝐲, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐋𝐚𝐡𝐚𝐝𝐝𝐚 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐂𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐦 𝐂𝐡𝐞𝐞𝐬𝐞 𝐨𝐧 𝐓𝐨𝐚𝐬𝐭, 𝐌𝐚𝐠𝐮𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐨𝐧 𝐓𝐢𝐥𝐚𝐩𝐢𝐚 𝐓𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐩𝐚𝐲𝐚𝐧 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐂𝐮𝐜𝐮𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐂𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐦 𝐂𝐡𝐞𝐞𝐬𝐞 𝐨𝐧 𝐓𝐨𝐚𝐬𝐭, and 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐠 𝐃𝐨𝐝𝐨𝐥 during the opening of Kidapawan Contemporary, an art exhibit featuring Kidapawan artists Zhejie Manibog and Neil Robin Gayramara.

The Kusangus, Tovokay, and Lahadda were from Datu Hudson Bayawan of Balabag, the Tinapayan was from Babu Fatima Plo, and the Dodol were from Babu Saliba Tumindeg, both of Patadon.

The samplers were enough for people in Davao to say that Kidapawan has a fighting chance to become a City of Gastronomy!

𝗞𝗶𝗱𝗮𝗽𝗮𝘄𝗮𝗻 𝗣𝗶𝘇𝘇𝗮 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘀!

The Kidapawan City History and Heritage Research Team had these unique ovens made to make Kidapawan's emerging delicacies, Kusangus and Tinapayan Pizza.

With a design similar to Bibingka ovens, they have also been used to make Burwa muffins.

The pizzas were debuted publicly during the recently concluded SRAA Meet, but will continue to be available to the public.

Tinapayan Pizza in particular is still for sale at Baclid's Barbeque, beside the Kidapawan City Cultural Heritage Museum's Satellite Exhibit in Patadon!
