Nature-based solutions (NbS) put nature at the center of how we address todayโs most urgent challenges. By protecting, restoring, and sustainably managing ecosystems, NbS helps reduce disaster risks, strengthen climate resilience, and support the well-being of communities and biodiversity alike.
In the Philippines, this approach is already delivering impact on the ground. Through the Solutions for the Future (SFF) initiative, WWF Philippines, WWF Netherlands, the Netherlands Red Cross (NLRC), and the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) have been working together over the past three years to scale community-centered NbS in Siargao, Leyte, and Palawan. Building on this momentum, the partnership is expanding with the involvement of WWF United Arab Emirates and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) Philippines. These collective efforts demonstrate how working with nature can effectively protect lives and livelihoods by reducing disaster risks and strengthening communitiesโ capacity to adapt to climate change.
The Government of the Kingdom of the Netherlands has also been involved in NbS work including its flood mitigation initiatives in Bulacan, and has expressed interest in supporting more projects, including working with WWF and the Red Cross in future environmental work, as shared by Her Excellency Maria Alfonsa Magdalena Geraedts, Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the Philippines (Embassy of the Netherlands in the Philippines).
What makes NbS effective is the combination of science, local knowledge, and strong partnerships. By working closely with communities and across organizations, these initiatives are designed to create lasting, inclusive impact where it matters most. Moments like these help turn collaboration into concrete action, opening more opportunities to scale ecosystem-based approaches such as flood risk reduction.
As climate and biodiversity challenges grow, the path forward is clear. Investing in nature is investing in people, resilience, and a more sustainable future.
