Joining the fight in strengthening the essence of press freedom, campus journalists from all over Naga City took part in the โWant A Fact?: Journalists on the Groundโ (WaF-JOTG) last April 9, 2025 at SM City Naga.
The event had three sessions spanning the whole day: the Focus Group Discussion, wherein the participants shared their insights; the Want a Fact? Seminar-Workshop; and a Panel Discussion, featuring various professionals.
Reinnard Balonzo, chairperson of the College Editors Guild of the Philippines (CEGP) - Bicol, led the seminar-workshop, discussing the importance of Media and Information Literacy (MIL), including the ethical and technical aspects of journalism.
โYou should first know, โwho do you write for?' [...] Know who you write for and ask if this will give justice to your subject,โ he highlighted.
Balonzo, along with Atty. Irene Cunanan-Berja, a public relations officer of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) - Camarines Sur; Rizza Mostar, an anchor for An Naga Ngonian; and Atty. Debra Badiola-Bracia also delved deeper into a panel discussion of pressing issues in journalism.
Included in the discussion were topics of misinformation through โSpotting Red Flags Amidst Factsโ, boundaries and rights with โWhen Does Presenting Facts Violate Rights?โ, and journalistic integrity and responsibilities in the โWho Gives a Fact in the Mediaโ talk.
โOne quote that has stood out to me was โfact is different than truth because truth is subjectiveโ so a journalist must give a fact in order to ensure credibility,โ Deann Armea, associate editor of The Naguenian, remarked.
Armea added that there is indeed a need for journalists to uphold in bringing out facts that will support the truth, pointing out that there is more to what is already being laid out.
The โWant a Fact: Journalists on the Groundโ is a joint initiative, spearheaded by Human Rights Incubator Champions, aiming to bring together campus journalists and provide an opportunity to foster and empower the voices of journalism.
