Association and Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network on Harubay 2026 • Naga City

“You are not merely hosts of a festival. You are collaborators of a Mother.

The Church in Bikol has given us a theme this year that is almost too simple to miss, and too deep to exhaust: Inâ: Nurturing a Growing Church. It is offered in thanksgiving for three clocks that strike together in 2026.

Four hundred thirty-one years since the Diocese of Nueva Cáceres was born.

Three hundred sixteen years since the devotion to Our Lady of Peñafrancia took public flesh in this city. Seventy-five years since that same local Church was raised to an archdiocese, and, on the same day, became a mother of dioceses. Three numbers. One story.

Mary does not decorate a Church that is already finished. She nurses a Church that is still growing. Let’s begin with the mystery, not with the timetable.

At Nazareth she conceives the Word in silence. At Cana she sees what is lacking before the stewards do. At Calvary she does not leave when the project looks like failure. In the upper room she waits with a frightened community until the Spirit makes them a Church.

This is why the Second Vatican Council, and the popes after it, dared a title that sounds almost too intimate: Mary, Mother of the Church. Bako syang istatwa sa gilid. Sya ina na yaon sa tahaw kan gabos.

Bikol already knew this before the documents. We do not first say Señora. We do not first say Virgen. We say Inâ. A child does not theologize the woman who feeds him. He calls her mother. And a mother does three things a growing Church cannot live without. She gathers. She feeds. She sends. That is the whole history of Peñafrancia, if we have eyes to see it.

Let’s go back to 1595.

On the fourteenth of August, Pope Clement VIII erected the Diocese of Nueva Cáceres, Ecclesia Cacerensis in Indiis Orientalibus, the Church of Cáceres in the Oriental Indies, with its seat in the Spanish city that is now Naga. The Franciscans had already planted parishes here: Naga, Quipayo, Nabua, Bula. The territory was huge. Camarines and Albay. The islands. Even parts of Tayabas and the Pacific coast. A seed, not yet a forest.

Then, about a hundred and fifteen years later, something happens that looks small in the records and enormous in the soul of this region.

A priest named Miguel Robles de Covarrubias carries a little picture of Our Lady of Peña de Francia. He has been sick. He has been healed. He has made a vow. The cimarrones, people living at the edge of the colonial city, ask for a chapel they can reach. He builds one. From that istampita a native artisan carves a wooden mother. By May of 1710 the image is already being processed. People come on Saturdays. Children are said to live again. The afflicted are anointed with oil from her lamps.

Notice where the devotion begins. Not in a cathedral chapter. Not from the so-called mother of all churches. Not in a palace. But in a poor chapel for people on the margin.

That is Mary’s method. She does not wait for the center to be ready. She goes where the Church is still unfinished, and she makes a home there.”

Pinano an mga gutom nin karahayan, asin isinubol an mayayaman sa kadaihan.
