NO CONGRATULATIONS FOR A SENATOR WHO STEALS FROM OUR FUTURE!

The National Union of Students of the Philippines (NUSP) rejects the selection of Sen. Joel Villanueva as the chairperson of the Senate Committee on Higher, Technical, and Vocational Education (CHTVE). We also call on State Universities and Colleges to hold him accountable for flood control allegations instead of posting congratulatory posts for his automatic membership to their Board of Regents/Trustees (BORs/BOTs).

As a personality involved in the flood control scandal that took billions from peopleโ€™s money, Villanueva is a direct threat to the youthโ€™s right to accessible, free, and quality education. While our SUCs are annually crying for enough funding support, and yet are faced with continuous budget cuts and deficiencies, the peopleโ€™s money is being allotted to the stateโ€™s various schemes of corruptionโ€”of which Villanueva directly benefits from.

Posting a congratulatory post for Villanueva will never please a naturally rotten soul. It will never guarantee additional funds for our schools. These are, in fact, an insult to our community. What our school and university administrations must do is amplify the calls and campaigns of educational stakeholders for higher state subsidies for education, and call for accountability for all corrupt officialsโ€”from the bottom to the top.

Students of the Philippines, let us continue our fight for a genuinely free and accessible education for all! Pondo sa edukasyon, hindi sa korapsyon! Lahat ng kurakot, dapat managot!
