Ever received a message like this? 𝗣𝗔𝗨𝗦𝗘 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗧𝗔𝗞𝗘 𝗔 𝗦𝗖𝗥𝗘𝗘𝗡𝗦𝗛𝗢𝗧. As the election period approaches nearer and nearer, you have to recognize the new faces of vote-buying.

When a candidate promised or offer you something with value such as position in their administration, promotion, or employment-- it is 𝗩𝗢𝗧𝗘-𝗕𝗨𝗬𝗜𝗡𝗚.

By being vigilant and educated we can fight and sweep off the dirt in our electoral system, and bring back the integrity of our government.

𝗘-𝗟𝗘𝗞𝗦𝗬𝗢𝗡 | 𝗥𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗙𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹𝘆

The family is the foundation of all beliefs and standpoints thus, this is where encouragement to vote begins and awareness about voters education should start. When family are politically aware and community involved, new generation of responsible citizens who care for their country and countrymen will be born. Children consult their parents about their political stance and choice therefore, parents should be a good role-model for their children.

Study shows that voter turnout among young (first-time) voters is highest among those living at home with their parents (Bhatti and Hansen, 2012). Parenting style and family background affect the youth political behavior (Islamia, 2023). Family has the greatest influence among Filipino youth on whom to vote on May 2022 election based on the State on the Filipino Youth: National YouthLed Survey (2021).

Politics is a sensitive topic yet, we can create a meaningful dialogue with our family members with these tips:

1. Be respectful and calm - Be sensitive with your words and opinions. Take a pause if necessary.
2. Share your stance - It is important to share each other beliefs and ideologies. Ones belief can be different from other.
3. Look for common ground - Talk about recent issues which you know your common denominator like ending corruption.
4. Acknowledge other perspective - Remember that it's okay to disagree and treat other opinion with respect. Ask reasons to open the topic for the purpose of understanding.

When you vote, you're not just voting for yourself, you're also voting for the future of you country. Here are some of the impacts of participating in election:

1. Political Representation - by participating in elections and casting votes for candidates, individuals have the opportunity to elect representatives who reflect their values and priorities.

2. Policy Decisions - the outcomes of elections and voting influence the development and implementation of policies on various issues such as healthcare, education, environment, economy, and social justice.

3. Social Change Voting can be a powerful tool for bringing about social change. Through voting, individuals can support candidates and initiatives that aim to address inequality, discrimination, and other societal challenges. Voting helps in advancing social causes and promoting a more inclusive and equitable future.

Anyone who criticizes the government in the Philippines could end up red-tagged. It is also called political vilification or red-baiting. Government officials, military personnel, or affiliated organizations usually do red tagging. They falsely accuse politicians, community leaders, journalists, activists, or organizations as “communist fronts,” “communist terrorists,” or “communist sympathizers.” It has become rampant in the Philippines in recent years.

Much like McCarthyism in the 1950s, red-tagging is often done without providing evidence. Using social media, television, and public posters, the government frequently begins by disseminating false information about its targets, painting them as communist sympathizers, terrorists, or members of the K*K. This can cause weakness and discredit the target. It puts the lives and freedoms of those labeled at risk, that's why it is controversial and widely criticized by the Human Rights Organization.

Threats or physical monitoring are frequently used in response to these widely disseminated fabrications, and they eventually end in attacks, detention, arrest, or even death.

Even great political analysts can’t tell when the problem of vote-buying and vote-selling during Philippine election started. These two are electoral violations used not just by the candidates, but their supporters as well as sort of campaign strategy. The Omnibus Election Code penalizes these election offenses, but even with the existence of such law, these wrongdoings still continue to surface in the setting of Philippine election.

Aside from the standards set for campaign paraphernalia such as the sizes and designated areas for posting of tarpaulins and posters. The Commission on Election through Resolution 10946 create an intensive surveillance against vote-buying by establishing Committee on Kontra Bigay, Kontra Bigay Center, and Rules and Regulation on Disqualification of Candidates.

The committee will be composed of officers from COMELEC and representatives of different government agencies and security department, to work together fight against vote-buying.

A smart and responsible voter knows the ethical quality of a good leader; those who does not indulge themselves to black propaganda to gain power and position. Being aware of the prohibited acts during campaign and election can drive us away from danger and lousy politicians.

Vote-buying is a violation when a person gives, offers, or promises money or anything with value including employment, franchise, grants, or promotions to induce someone to vote for or against any candidate.

Additionally, when a candidate or political party threatened or bribe someone during election, it may be considered as violation of Section 4 of Republic Act No. 101681 otherwise known as Terrorism Financing Prevention and Suppression Act and Section 12 of RA No. 114792 or Human Security Act of 2007 under extortion.

Presumed vote-buying on the other hand involves house-to-house campaign and distributing gift checks or groceries; holding activities, bingo games or talent shows that distribute prizes; transporting and gathering two or more voters to a specific place before and on election day; possessing and transporting cash exceeding to Five Hundred Thousand Pesos (Php 500,000.00); hiring two (2) watchers per precinct for one candidate; conducting feeding programs, medical missions or distribution of ‘ayuda’.

Under the Omnibus Election Code, any person found guilty of vote-buying and vote –selling shall be punished with imprisonment of not less than one year but not more than six years and shall not be subject to probation. The guilty party shall be sentenced to suffer disqualification to hold public office and deprivation of the right of suffrage. If he is a foreigner, he shall be sentenced to deportation which shall be enforced after the prison term has been served

Red tagging is a form of violation of our human rights. It is an indication of deceptive governance when you are labeled a terrorist simply for having different views than the administration. Let this serve as a warning to pick your leaders carefully until speaking the truth and raising concerns doesn't paint you the villain.

𝗘𝗗𝗜𝗧𝗢𝗥𝗜𝗔𝗟 | 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗨𝗻𝘄𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗩𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴

Last month, the authorities raided Baofu Compound of Zun Yuan Technology Incorporated, a Philippine Offshore Gaming Operator (POGO) in TARLAC, Philippines. The town Mayor Alice Leal Guo was allegedly involved and she is currently under investigation. This involvement caused her background to be investigated. According to the residents of Bamban, Guo is an unfamiliar figure. She emerged abruptly during the election period, backed and endorsed by the incumbent Mayor, Jose Antonio Feliciano. Guo presented herself as a young businesswoman and a daughter of a Filipino mother and a half-Chinese father.

The ability of the people to elect leaders through voting is what makes democracy unique. On the other hand, irresponsible voting behavior can have negative effects on the community. Unwise voting can lead to the election of leaders who might not possess the knowledge, abilities, or moral character needed to lead with effectiveness.

Voters lack access to reliable information about candidates' platforms, track records, and policies, they are prone to manipulation by misinformation. This can lead to personal interests over the welfare of the public, leading to mismanagement, corruption, and inefficiency in governance.

Let's refrain from basing our votes solely on factors like wealth, influence, or popularity. Let's avoid supporting someone simply because they've been endorsed by others or have lent us favors. Our decisions should be grounded in careful consideration of candidates' qualifications, values, and platforms, rather than superficial or personal affiliations.

This ongoing issue of Mayor Guo is the most accurate example of lack of informed voting and the result of being an uneducated voter. Let’s take this as a sign to promote voter’s education and awareness. By empowering citizens with the knowledge and skills to critically evaluate candidates and make informed voting decisions, communities can mitigate the risks associated with unwise voting practices.
