Every Saturday this growing group of youth from Halian Island gather to clean up their own island, have learned to understand the value of their home for marine biodiversity, and have become champions of the environment in their own way — the very best proof that it is young people that will always lead the way. The best thing we can do is listen, provide them with the tools they need, and allow them to dream big.

Earlier this year they got new goggles to be able to see underneath the rich water of their island that is home to an abundance of endangered marine life such as the Pawikan.

Maraming Salamat Seawikan for all the work you continue to do for our Earth 🌏🌞🌺

We are always on the look out for potential partners to support the projects of youth groups within our islands, feel free to reach out via dm or email [email protected] 💌

I often ask people what makes a good life. Most of the time the answers revolve around accumulating things such as a secure job, a nice house, or comfort. We are wired to believe that having more equals being happier. But my recent time at the fisherports in Manila completely flipped that idea on its head.

I stood right on the edge of the city with buildings rising in the background. I saw coastal communities dealing firsthand with a changing climate. The water here is a daily and unpredictable risk. But when I watched the kids play, I noticed they do not shrink away from the water even when the tide brings in the rest of the city’s discarded trash. There is a strong sense of PAGKILALA in how they move. They respect the sea but refuse to let it rob them of their childhood. I took photos of a battered outrigger boat built for heavy labor easily becoming a jungle gym. A piece of floating foam turns into a makeshift raft. These kids adapt and find room to play and laugh right in the middle of it all.

I watched these kids helping out by carrying the daily catch of alamang. They find real joy in being useful, in belonging to their families, and in knowing they matter to their community. Watching them really changed my perspective on what we should want for the next generation. We put so much effort into protecting kids from every single struggle. But seeing these children makes me think the real goal is helping them build this exact kind of grit and deep connection to their community.

Through my lenses, I captured photos that touched my heart and gave me a new perspective of Manila. 🏛️

A little girl from the Smoky Mountain, a mountain full of trash, first time holding a camera and being fascinated by it, shows how they are being locked away from the big world because of the large companies that want their land. A little boy and an old man of different ages working hard to live every day because of the unfair life, a couple working together to sell balloons just to make sure they have something to eat on their tables, and a mother-daughter watching cars pass by, hoping one day their life will change for the better.

Every day is indeed a challenge, not only in Manila but everywhere in the world. Making a small step in helping the world change for the better has a big impact on everyone’s life.

Maynila, sa mga balintataw ng kabataan. 🇵🇭

Going through the kids’ perspectives on how they view the world comes with engaging with their truth and what they see in the streets, and I find myself gazing through their smiling faces as they see the world differently with innocence and hope. These photos encapsulate the saya and pag-asa that they still carry in their lives. And in every frame, light passes through their eyes, and what they see comes with the continuous belief that there is a better future for them in our country.

Together, when we see right through their perspectives, we live up to what future we can bring for them.

Manila is a city of layers, where the golden glow of the bay meets the grit of the daily grind. It’s a place of massive contrasts: high-fashion billboards towering over weathered jeepneys, and industrial giants framing the quiet play of children.

Through these frames, I wanted to capture the pulse of the streets—the resilience in a young boy’s work, the brotherhood found in small corners, and the wide-eyed wonder that persists through it all.

During our visit to Baseco, Manila, the rain fell steadily from a fray and restless sky, yet the community welcomed us with warmth that outshone the weather. Among the many kind faces we met was Sir Dante, the President of the Guardians of Baseco, whose quiet dedication to serving their community was evident in every action he carried out. Along the way, several children tagged along. We met Alfrancis and his friends, whose bright laughter echoed above the sound of the heavy rain.

They guided us through through narrow paths and puddled streets, leading us toward the beach they hold very dearly. With bright eyes and eager voices, they shared stories of afternoons spent by the shore, playing games, chasing one another across the sand, and watching the waves roll in as the sun begins to set.

As we approached the coastline, the beauty of the horizon stood in painful contrast to the reality before us. The sea carried with it a tide of drifting waste, scattered along the shore like an uninvited presence that refused to leave. Yet even with the beach scattered with waste, the children continued to walk barefoot on the sand.

The sunset painted the sky in soft shades of gold and amber, wrapping the community in a gentle glow. In that light, their smiles shone brighter than anything else. They deserve a shoreline where the sand is clean beneath their feet and the water is safe to touch. They deserve mornings filled with possibility and evenings filled with peace. Baseco shouldn’t always carry the image of a place left in waste. It deserves to be remembered as a place nurtured by caring hands and protected by devoted hearts.

This community stands on the front lines of rising tides and a changing climate. To care for Baseco is to care for the people who call it home. Above all, it means honoring their dreams, protecting their future, and ensuring that the shore they run across today will be renewed and preserved for the many tomorrows still waiting for them.

Where Hope Washes Ashore

From the islands—where the sea is our playground, our livelihood, and our home—to the heart of the city, where the ocean tells a different story. In places like Baseco, Manila, the shoreline is heavy with plastic and waste. The beach is no longer clean, yet life continues. Children run, play, and laugh by the water. Behind every smile is a story of struggle, resilience, and hope that refuses to disappear.

One moment stayed with me—the quiet love of a father holding his child. In that simple act was tenderness, protection, and a future imagined. In the child’s eyes were dreams—dreams that deserve a world better than the one we are leaving behind.

Then there is Smokey Mountain, where families live surrounded by what society has thrown away. Mountains of trash shape everyday life, yet within this place, life persists. Children still find reasons to laugh. Parents still fight to protect their families. Even here, hope survives—not because life is easy, but because people choose to love, to endure, and to dream.

These places—so different, yet deeply connected—taught me one truth: Kinaiyahan is not just about nature. It is about people.
