The municipality of Sablayan has gained international recognition after UNESCO designated the Matibay na Bayan ng Sablayan Biosphere Reserve as one of 14 new biosphere reserves added to the global network in 2026. The designation was announced on World Environment Day and places Sablayan alongside newly recognized biosphere reserves from countries across Asia, Europe, Africa, and the Americas.
The Matibay na Bayan ng Sablayan Biosphere Reserve encompasses ecologically important terrestrial, coastal, and marine ecosystems, including areas connected to the globally significant Apo Reef Natural Park, the largest coral reef system in the Philippines and one of the largest in the world. The designation recognizes the area's exceptional biodiversity, conservation efforts, and commitment to balancing environmental protection with sustainable community development.
In Conservation Biology and Sustainable Development, biosphere reserves are considered "living laboratories" where communities, scientists, and government agencies work together to conserve biodiversity while supporting livelihoods and local economies. UNESCO's biosphere reserve program promotes solutions that allow people and nature to thrive together rather than treating conservation and development as competing goals.
The Philippines now continues to strengthen its presence within UNESCO's global conservation network, joining other Philippine biosphere reserves such as Puerto Galera Biosphere Reserve, Palawan Biosphere Reserve, Albay Biosphere Reserve, and yApayao Biosphere Reserve. Conservationists view the new designation as an important step toward protecting biodiversity, promoting sustainable tourism, and enhancing climate resilience in one of the country's most ecologically valuable regions.
