Breakfast is more than just the first meal of the day. It is also the fuel that powers childrenโ€™s minds and bodies at the start of the day, supporting learning at school and daily growth.
A healthy breakfast provides children with sustained energy and supports the physical activities performed throughout the day. Studies show that eating breakfast helps students concentrate better in class and perform well academically.
Using the Pinggang Pinoy ยฎ as a guide, a nutritious breakfast becomes easier to plan!
Aim for a balanced plate with:

Aside from these, adequate hydration is also important in maintaining body temperature and supporting physical and cognitive functions, including concentration, memory, and mood, which are crucial for learning.
Children get the right balance of nutrients to stay active, alert, and ready to learn by following Pinggang Pinoy ยฎ!
Make every morning count. Serve a nutritious breakfast daily and set the tone for a smarter and stronger day ahead.

On September 4โ€“5, 2025, Muntinlupa City welcomed the National Nutrition Evaluation Team (NNET) as part of its bid for the 2nd Year Consistent Regional Outstanding Winner in Nutrition (CROWN) Maintenance Award.

The validation team was led by Nutrition Officer II Robi Angelo Ebbah (NNC-NSD), together with Planning Officer IV Divorah Aguila (DOST-FNRI) and Assistant Professor Pamela Aclan (UPLB-IHNF). Over the two-day visit, the team conducted a comprehensive desk review, interviews, and field visits showcasing the cityโ€™s nutrition programs and best practices in the barangays and of the city.

During the courtesy call, Mayor Ruffy Biazon, Chair of the City Nutrition Committee, welcomed the NNET along with RNPC Mila Federizo, CNAO Dr. Magdalena Meana, CNC members, and the nutrition secretariat. Mayor Biazon reaffirmed his strong commitment to prioritizing nutrition, emphasizing its vital role in sustainable development. First Lady Trina Biazon also graced the activity to meet the evaluation team and express her full support for the cityโ€™s nutrition initiatives.

On the second day, the NNET visited key program sites, including the Human Milk Bank at Ospital ng Muntinlupa, the HAPAG Garden in Barangay Bayanan, and the Muntinlupa Training and Resource Center for Women, where baskets are skillfully crafted from dried water lily leaves. The visit concluded with a feedback session with Mayor Biazon, the Nutrition Secretariat, and members of the CNC.

โ€œMuntinlupaโ€™s commitment to nutrition goes beyond awardsโ€”it is about creating lasting impact in the lives of our people,โ€ Mayor Ruffy Biazon affirmed in his response message.

As Muntinlupa City awaits the results of the evaluation, the local government remains steadfast in advancing nutrition as a development priority, committed to securing healthier lives and stronger communities for its people.

With the continuous development in information technology, mobile devices are diversified into classes such as smartphones, tablets, and wearable devices. Wearable devices are used either as an accessory or embedded in clothes. These technologies are rapidly transforming how people monitor and manage their health, including nutrition, by tracking physical activity, calorie burn, hydration levels, and other health status indicators. According to a study by Burmaoglu et al (2018), the global market for wearable devices is expected to compoundly grow by 42.6% annually.

Once limited to simple pedometer or heart rate monitors, wearable devices have evolved into powerful, data-driven device tools that provide real-time feedback on everything from sleep patterns to stress levels. Among the many functions, physical activity tracking remains the most common feature provided by wearable devices.

The 10th message from the Nutritional Guidelines for Filipinos (NGF), a nutrition guide developed by a Technical Working Group led by the Department of Science and Technology โ€“ Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI), encourages Filipinos to be physically active, make healthy food choices, manage stress, refrain from drinking alcohol and smoking to help prevent lifestyle-related non-communicable diseases. Moreover, DOST-FNRI recommends that adult Filipinos engage in at least 30 minutes of physical activity on most days of the week. Similarly, the World Health Organization recommends more than 300 minutes moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity for adults throughout the week for additional health benefits. However, findings from the 2023 National Nutrition Survey (NNS) revealed that 5 in every 10 adults (46.9%) aged 20 to 59 do not engage in adequate physical activity.

According to the 2012 Nutritional Guidelines for Filipinos (NGF), there are various types of physical activities that individuals can enjoy, including aerobic exercises, strength training, flexibility exercises, and daily work or lifestyle activities. Staying active doesnโ€™t always require extensive workoutsโ€”everyday tasks such as taking the stairs instead of the elevator, cleaning the house, or standing while talking on the phone can also contribute to physical fitness. Choosing activities that you genuinely enjoy makes it easier to stay consistent and motivated. You have the freedom to set your own goals based on your physical condition and lifestyle. To get started, remember to begin slowly and increase your goals gradually. Make sure to wear comfortable clothes, stay hydrated, and listen to your body. Avoid overexertion and you should finish your workout feeling comfortably tired.

Given that physical activity is a well-established marker of both current health status and future health risks, wearable devices serve as valuable tools for tracking an individualโ€™s functional performance. In a study by Smuck et al (2021), wearable devices were integrated into health systems, contributing to the successful implementation of digital health monitoring programs. This development supports chronic disease management, health maintenance, and disease prevention.

With the ongoing advancement of wearable technology, these devices are expected to play an even greater role in shaping the future of health and wellness. As consumers become more health-conscious, wearable devices serve as convenient tools to support fitness goals and promote a more mindful lifestyle. Monitoring and recording physical activity can help individuals stay motivated and consistent in maintaining an active lifestyle. The ideal device should be user-friendly, acceptable, and capable of providing accurate measurements. Remember, be stronger than your strongest excuse. Move more now and live more later!
