In the span of years of experience, according to Fren, he never experienced any kind of injustices in his workplace such as inequalities, discrimination, wage suppressions among other issues that most labor workers experience. He was fortunate enough to land on a job that recognizes his rights as an employee and gives him the benefits that he deserves.

During the interview, he shared that he has been a government employee for eight years. Currently, he works at the City Mayor's Office of Cabanatuan. It was a good opportunity for him to be able to work in a government office. In terms of privileges, he gets benefits in his work, whether financially or not. When asked if it is enough for him to be recognized through that, he implied that it is enough for him to receive that kind of recognition as an employee— through the benefits.

Fren shared that he was never a part of any union but he acknowledges the importance of labor unions in society.

He considers labor unions as the middle ground that weighs both ends of the workplace. Through labor unions, employees and employers would be aware of the interests, rights, and benefits that must be laid out in between. Furthermore, in the City Government of Cabanatuan, workers' rights and labor unions are acknowledged. There are programs and practices in the local government office that support the advocacies that recognize the rights of workers and fight for their grievances and interests.

John has been working for 12 years at Muñoz Satellite TV Systems, Inc. (MSAT/ADS) as a cable and internet technician. The company's main branch is in Muñoz, but he works at the branch office in Lupao, Nueva Ecija, where he also lives.

His position requires him to install cable and internet connections for their subscribers. They had to work for 10 hours, excluding lunch breaks, even with the scorching heat of the sun. They had to make sure that every client had a stable internet and cable connection. According to him, he considered his work to be easy because it is home-based and he gets to spend quality time with his family. Moreover, he also receives work benefits from his company, particularly SSS and PAG-IBIG, which he deems useful in the future.

However, John indicated that he had experienced some issues in the workplace. He experienced inequalities when those who had connections with the higher-ups were favored. He also experienced discrimination among those workers who had worked longer than him in the company. "If you don't do what they want, they will put all the blame on you." John implied that in order to keep his position, he must comply with the worker's commands. Regardless of the issues he faced, he remained firm just to provide for his family.

John highlights the importance of labor rights and how it protects workers like him from inequality and discrimination, "Mahalaga ang labor rights para sa ating mga manggagawa, yan ang malakas na sandigan natin para hindi tayo maapi or maabuso ng mga pinaglilingkuran natin. Kapag nakakaranas na tayo ng hindi maganda sa ating mga pinaglilingkuran at naaabuso ang ating karapatan pwede tayo dumulog sa kanila para maging patas ang pamamalakad ng isang pinaglilingkuran, para hindi rin tayo maabuso at para maibigay lahat sa atin ang karampatang benepisyo na sang ayon sa atin kung gaano na tayo katagal sa work natin."

Labor unions vital in promoting workers’ rights – Silvestre Bello III, 2020

Undeniably, there are a lot of issues being faced by our workers up until today; inequalities, discriminations, and wage suppressions among others. As a way to reinforce the call to action and advocate in safeguarding the interests, rights, and benefits of workers, The UNMA Project is launching "Sa Likod ng Lingkod: Uncovering inequalities, Discrimination, and Suppression of Our Workers." It aims to delve into and feature real-life stories of workers as well as tackle workers-related issues while promoting labor union— as one of our main objectives in this advocacy.

This is a continuing story. Stay tuned!

Why is it important that workers have the liberty to join labor rights movements?

As stated by Amante (2019), workers shall be provided a fundamental framework to utilize their rights in joining associations in order to collectively reiterate their call for improved terms and conditions of employment, particularly wages, health and safety, job security, and other working conditions. Meanwhile, union leaders and advocates must persistently exert an effort in pushing for a collective political will to harmonize policy with legislation and demand for transparency in terms of rules and regulations to provide for equal opportunities for employment, fair procedures for settlement of work-related grievances and labor disputes.

In order to whole-heartedly express our support, here is one of our activities dubbed "UNMAdhika: Likha Para sa Manggagawa." The UNMA Project advocates for labor unions and the workers' freedom to be part of labor rights movements as we firmly stand alongside them in their collective call to action for their grievances and in safeguarding their interests.

Do you know that there are two classifications for unions in the Philippines?

According to the Department of Labor and Employment, Public Sector Union or Public Employees Organization refers to any unions or associations of employees in the government sector while Private Sector Union or Labor Organization refers to any unions or associations of employees in the private sector. Both of these organizations have the same purposes: to ensure mutual aid, interest, cooperation, protection, or other lawful purposes for the benefit of the workers.

To learn more about labor unions and recognize their importance in our society, join our online webinar dubbed " : Unionism is a Labor Right!" Let us make a conscious effort to know about labor rights so we can fight for the best interest of our workers.

Did you know that the first Labor Day celebration in the Philippines took place in Baguio City on May 1, 1903? It was organized by the first labor federation in the country known as the Union Obrera Democratica de Filipinas, now known as Union Obrera Democratica.

Thousands of workers chanted ant-American capitalism and imperialism while marching from Plaza Moriones in Tondo to Malacañang to demand complete independence. It advocated the rights of the labor force during the American occupation of the Philippines

— DOLE-CAR

Today, in the Philippines, Labor Day or “Araw ng Paggawa” is not only celebrated with parades and other forms of celebration, but also with rallies and demonstrations of the labor sector. It highlights the reality that the workers of the country have proven to be partners of the government for economic development and positive social changes.
